   I received the emailed quoted below and wondered if it could be for real. If not, what is the sender of this email aiming at achieving?

   Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2011 5:47 PM
   Subject: Your mailbox has exceeded the storage limit
   
   ATTENTION.
   
   Your mailbox has exceeded the storage limit which is 10GB as set by your administrator, you are currently running on 10.9GB,you may not be able to send or receive new mail until you re-validate your mailbox.
   
   To re-validate your mailbox  please fill below details
   
   * Name:
   * Username:
   * Password:
   * Date of Birth:
   * Country Or Territory:
    
   Warning!!! Account owner that fails to verify his/her account after two weeks of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently.
   
   AFTER VERIFICATION,A MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO YOU AFTER WHICH YOU ARE ADVISED TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY.

      Once they have access to your account, and helped by any other information you surrender to them, the scammers will have enough material for some serious "identity theft." They can use this information to take out loan applications, get credit cards, and other types of fraud in your name.
      
      They probably have software to "data mine" your email correspondence, so they can target your contacts and others as potential victims, who will think they are hearing from you.

         This may explain why my sister who lives in South Africa was unable to gain access to her email account. At the same time an email was sent out to relatives saying she has lost her money, baggage and mobile phone in UK, and that she desperately needed someone to send to her £1000 which she will refund immediately she gets back to South Africa.

      I have ignored this email. Hopefully, your post here may help others who may get the same email.
      
      I assume you mean the spammers will get control of my email. From there, what are the known strategies that they can use to get money from me?

         They could send mails to people and companies with which you do business.  In a recent case, the scammers sent an email to a publisher, pretending to be their printer contractor, and gave them a change of address to send checks to.  Almost worked.  Checks went out to the fake address, but the company caught on in time to stop payment on the checks.

   The minute you see bad grammar in a message like this, you can safely ignore it. Yahoo corporate communications can put together a sentence correctly; spammers often can't.

   Reduce your exposure to scammers like this and your dependence on free public mailboxes which support them, by developing your own website... It costs less than $3.00 per month to have a private, secure mailbox, in which you can set your own filters to remove rubbish like that.

   It's all about identity theft. Once they your date of birth and country of origin, they can use that information to take out credit cards, etc. in your name. As well they will now have access to your valid email account - and on it goes.

   I use Yahoo mail and they are upgrading they have sent out e-mails stating that the new mail is coming, you can either make the change your self know or they are gong to do it for you. The e-mail states

       Faster email
       The latest Yahoo! Mail spam-protection technology
       Easier-to-use design
       Unlimited email storage so that you can keep everything you want
   
   When you upgrade to the newest version of Yahoo! Mail, your content (messages, folders, contacts, etc.) will be there.
   
   This is copied out of the original email as you can see you have unlimited email storage and spam protection to bad it's not scam protection.

      That is true and its from Yahoo. The difference is that in your case they do not ask you for:
      
      * Name:
      * Username:
      * Password:
      * Date of Birth:
      * Country Or Territory:
