Saltymick's trip around Australia

   Has anybody else had a read of Saltymick? He has travelled around the entire continent of Australia from the east coast. Fascinating Hubs and great photos. If you want to learn more about Australia that's a great place to start.

      Checked it out, he is an interesting and aware individual who tells great stories. I enjoyed reading and will be back for more!

         I should have suggested starting at the beginning or at least across the top end as there are some sad and sorry tales that he has turned in to moments of adventure meeting people he would never have done if not for that break down. It's all good reading and I hope he turns it all into a book one day, when he's over his trip that is.

   I met a very eccentric English guy in NZ who had a goal of walking all around the coastline of Australia. He was doing it in sections, and then flying home (visa/and to earn money). In 2007 when I met him, he had over the years started at the Victoria state line and got as far north as Cape York.
   
   He had been in the army and was very into survival, and had spent time in the bush with the Aborigines learning their hunting, tracking and bush tucker techniques. He carried very little luggage, dressed from the op shop and just got a new set when the clothes he was wearing disintegrated, lived off the land and slept in the open.
   
   Very occasionally he would book into a hostel to wash/do laundry/rest. I met him in a hostel in Greymouth, (he was currently walking from Christchurch to Picton to catch the ferry to go to a gardening job in the North Island) where there were only 4 of us staying that night, and he told us fascinating stories of his adventures. Even though it was winter in NZ he slept out and he told how to pick the warmest tree to sleep under and loads of other interesting stuff.
   
   He is one guy who should really write a book, and made the rest of us a bit ashamed about complaining about not being able to get a WIFI connection and there being no central heating!

      The country is so vast, I can't imagine walking the entire coastline. I have travelled many sections by road and am continually filled with awe at the size of this place. There are stretches with 300-400 kms between fuel stops. In a car that can be catastrophic, on foot that is surely dismal.
