Mr. Obama gave a speech today based on his plan to pay for his latest stimulus package and a way to tackle the nation’s debt problem.  Mr. Obama is calling for higher taxes on higher earners, those who make more than $200k a year, and corporations.  Once again he used Warren Buffet's claim that his secretary pays more.  Obama is clearly banking on the notion that most people do not understand the difference between income taxes and capital gain taxes.  Im so sick of his campaign style speeches.  The treasury Secretray even said, after the speech, that they would not give congress a plan on taxes but want them to come up with it.

you are right....but when I hear the President is going to announce a plan I would think there would actually be a plan and not just rhetoric

Obama should take a permanent vacation, have a cardboard cutout made of himself and just record his usual keywords "the rich" "roads and bridges" " fair share" "balanced approach" "investments" etc and just have some technician mix the phrases and play it. The man has NO ideas only IDEOLOGY, and that's all this snake oil salesman is selling.

Well all ideologists have great ideas but no substance and that describes our President .  Full of ideas and no substance.  Maybe if he had to live like so many of us paycheck to paycheck he would get a clue.  Particularly on how to balance a check book and live within our means.

Thanks Nick for the comment.  The crux of the problem, is the entire government is full of ideologists that don't have a clue.  Couple that with people who don't take time to research and only listen to the rhetoric.....well this is what you get a giant hot mess.

The fact that the richest people pay in total 7% of their income angers you when the poor to middle class are 30% - 50%?

I fully agree that the loopholes need to be closed especially when it comes to the legal tax evasion many corporations and rich individuals use.

7% my a$$....I have worked for people who have more money than the catholic church and as a consultant with an MBA I reviewed their taxes and in some cases prepared them and they paid on average 28 - 35%.....the loop holes brought them down many times to more like 25%

thisisoliposted 12 years agoin reply to this

and you think avoiding half the taxes is okay?

Out of all the people who know their financial situation, I get the feeling Warren Buffett knows what he has in teh bank, and what he pays out.

Yeah--he said he pays at 17%. Some of them pay zilch...thanks to Swiss bank accounts.
Fancy footwork in the law, LYING about income, taking off for "business expenses"...yada yada ya

Why is this even a question?
LOOK at who profited the past 10 years, and who went downhill.

who said it was ok? I said they should do away with the loop holes but buffet is an old fool who is just finishing his life by getting into the world of politics.....he or obama show nothing to back up what they say so how do you know either is telling the truth....but according to the irs buffet is past due...why doesnt he pay??

Buffet is a hypocrite!  He's been fighting his tax bill for more than a decade doing all he can to limit his liability while claiming the rich should pay more. Like I said, why not make the rest of us pay less?

              Obama has done that.

His tax structure lowers taxes on those making under $250,000.

Unless all of you are millionaires, I'd say you're all a bunch of ingrates!

Well he hasn't lowered them enough apparently. The top rate is still 36%, and Buffet only pays 17%, so the annointed one needs to lower the top rate to 17%, them M A Y B E, I'll like him! smile

Top rate needs to go UP, not down!

It has gone down drastically since Reagan.

The top have benefitted for 30+ years.

Now, they can start to pay like the rest of the working people.

do you know if it has been 10yrs or under but close.......there is a rule that most do not know about that internal irs personal use....called the Csed date which basically is a formula ......after 10 yrs the irs cant collect...statute of limitations....which would be a good reason to hold them off for ten years or why he did and now he doesnt have to pay as all they can do is ask but not garnish or levy anything

Allow me to put it this way, if you go to a bullsh*t factory, what should you expect?
Politics is just a bullsh*t factory, be it red bullsh*t or blue bullsh*t

    President Obama:

"This is not class warfare. It’s math. The money is going to have to come from someplace. And if we’re not willing to ask those who've done extraordinarily well to help America close the deficit and we are trying to reach that same target of $4 trillion, then the logic, the math says everybody else has to do a whole lot more: We’ve got to put the entire burden on the middle class and the poor. We’ve got to scale back on the investments that have always helped our economy grow. We’ve got to settle for second-rate roads and second-rate bridges and second-rate airports, and schools that are crumbling.

That’s unacceptable to me. That’s unacceptable to the American people. And it will not happen on my watch. I will not support -- I will not support -- any plan that puts all the burden for closing our deficit on ordinary Americans. And I will veto any bill that changes benefits for those who rely on Medicare but does not raise serious revenues by asking the wealthiest Americans or biggest corporations to pay their fair share. We are not going to have a one-sided deal that hurts the folks who are most vulnerable."
