How much density of keyword do you prefer in your articles? OR in other words, how many times you use your main keyword in a 500-600 words article? And do you also mix up other permutations of that main keyword? If yes, then what is the density of those additional permutations?

The keyword for your question is - RELEVANCE

Don't intentionally stuff keywords for the sake of stuffing. Naturally if you are writing it related enough to your topic, your keyword or similar words will appear several times. If your keyword or related keywords totally never appear, it'll look like you're writing something irrelevant.

Just for reference, usually keywords density ranges around 3-5% depending on the length of your keyword. If you have a 1-2 word keyword, it'll probably be easier to appear often. But if you have a 3-5 words keyword, it'll be weird if this long phrase keep appearing.

      Be natural, be relevant.

      2-4% is best.

at least twice, then it should be related to your hub topic. But sometimes I do not mind keyword density, as long as I enjoy writing, it comes naturally.

When Google indexes and ranks a webpage, it highlights the keyword in the title, URL and description..so I would use it in your hub title and body.

I often try and think of and use closely related keyword phrases within my hub besides my main keyword phrase. Often times it can take a while to hit top ten for my main keyword phrases. By having some easier, long tail keyword phrases that are closely related to my main keywords I will often get search engine traffic from these in the mean time.

I don't worry about keyword density. As you write about a subject you should be naturally using them, not worrying about their density or keeping a count. If anything I worry about using them too much.

I have heard Matt Cutts say in one of his YouTube Webmaster Help videos "Once is enough" concerning keyword density within the visible web page. Matt works for Google.

Use of Keywords in order of importance (in my opinion):
    1) Main keyword phrase in Title
    2) Main keyword phrase in the description in such a way to entice the user to want to come read your hub. Good place to use maybe one alternative keyword if possible.
    3) Main keywords in the URL. (HP turns the Title into the URL by default)
    4) Using main keyword phrase near the very top of the hub.
    5) Naturally using your keywords within main part of the hub.
    6) Use closely related long tail keyword phrases within <h2> tags. Good way to do this is by making it a subsection of your hub.
    7) Place main keyword phrase near bottom of hub. I name my comment module "Keywords... Comments".
    8) Add tags with relevant keywords that you actually used in your hub.
    9) Link out to authoritative related content using keywords or closely related keywords as anchor text.
If I was to include external SEO factors I'd put this as #3 or #4:
Use main keyword phrase as the anchor text in incoming links.

While there are other ways to use keywords, like image alt tags, I have had good luck concentrating on the things I listed above.

Absolute top of my hates are articles that say "I cook cakes because I like cooking cakes because cooked cakes are best when they are cooked".

The idea of any form of writing involving a % of repetition - whether it is a number from 1 to 100 - seems totally wrong.

I want to make money, get search traffic and so on, but I have no wish to play that game.

If you can still produce something worth reading with the right percentage (whatever that is) - then I guess that's a real skill.

I have yet to read anything where the writer is a practiced keyword percentage practioner without wincing.

What Mark said. Those kind are the ones that may earn a down vote while hopping. At least from me. If it's hard to read, then you added too many.
