Everyone has a favorite major character, but sometimes it's the minor characters that are more interesting and funny.

So who is your favorite one-act character whose brief appearance in a novel makes you smile?

And why do you like this character?

My favorite minor character is Syme from Nineteen Eighty-Four.

He's super intelligent and has the power to destroy words. I love his enthusiasm for language and word construction. And his logic in describing why words hold the potential for human thought is genius.

I'm not exactly sure who my favorite character would be.  There are lots of entertaining ones.  I keep thinking of Twain and Faulkner.  They are both so ripe with choices, it'd be hard to settle for just one.

Goodhue Coldfied in Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! is one of my absolute favorites.  He locks himself in his room in the upstairs of his house and makes his daughter send up food to him for the last few years of his life.   Why he does this takes far more explaining than is justified here, it's Faulkner. smile

Also, Doc from Cannery Row (or any one of the characters really as it is very brief) is another one of my favorites.  I just love everything about that book.

Syme is definitely an intriguing character. Thought provoking to say the least.

I could add like 8 more characters now that I am thinking about them all. smile Good topic!

Long John Silver, the one-legged buccaneer in Rober Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island.'  Of course, when one thinks of him, one is immediately transported to his portrayal by Robert Newton, the British Actor of the 1940s and 1950s.

Newton played a similar pirate role in ' Blackbeard the Pirate.'  If people are immitating a swashbuckling pirate, it's generally Robert Newton's way of doing it they chose.
