What could I put in this essay for my Art College Application?

   I'm applying to do a BFA degree in Graphic Design at an art college in NYC. For my application, I have to write an essay titled my Statement of Intent. Basically, I have to write why I want to study Graphic Design, and why I want to go specifically to their school.
   
   I have some ideas, but frankly, I'm still having some difficulties putting it together. It has to be 500 words or less, and is due February 1st.
   
   Some of my reasons include that I've always known that I wanted to study something with Art, and Graphic Design is a very versatile field that can feed into doing Advertising or Animation. Plus, I want to experience living away from my little island home of Barbados, and live in the 'Big Apple'. the School is supposed to be really good, and have lots of great career opportunities like internships at the end of my education there. My essay needs to be well written, and not boring - like, it should keep the reader's attention from the beginning.
   
   
   Do you have any tips for me? Especially in the areas of organization and ways to make my essay 'exciting' and to capture the reader's attention?

      Try an outline.  Make a list of one or two word ideas, thoughts or keywords that apply to your intentions.  Include thoughts about your personality and talents.  Don't cull at this point, include any idea that comes to mind.   Look over your list and put in order of importance - most critical on top and subordinate thoughts beneath the primary ideas they support.  Then begin to write simple sentences that describe or explain each idea.  Combine your sentences into paragraphs that characterize and illustrate your most important ideas.  Rewrite your essay several times to improve cogency, eliminate ambiguity and refine a feeling of earnest conviction.
      
      I'm sure the reviewers are looking to see if you can communicate well - good grammar, spelling and logical arrangement. They probably aren't looking for the next great novelist.

      Cardia - It sounds like you already have the basis for your essay.  You can elaborate on the specifics of your interest in that school but WriteAngled is correct.  If this is a private college (not a state school), they are interested in your motivation to go to school because they are 'graded' on how many students actually complete the degree program.  This is how they retain their academic standing.
      
      So the best advice I can give is to format your essay like this: Introduction, Body, Closing, Thank you.
      1) Intro:  Who you were and who you now are. (I've always loved to design, blah, blah. and now I realize I want to make this my life's work.  Blah blah. Push your natural talents here.
      2) Body:  Show your field of interest: (I have become very interested in [animation, film, advertising, whatever] because_________ .  (it suits my style which is very comical, austere, flexible, choose any number of adjectives)  Push your interests here -why they interest you and why this particular school fits your interests.
      3) Closing: I can see myself doing_______and have project ideas which I see as (promising, fulfilling a niche, entertaining, whatever).  I want the opportunity to enhance my natural skills, grow my talent, blah, blah.  Push your motivation here.
      4) Thank you:  For allowing me the opportunity to be part of (school name).  Assume you're already accepted.  Push your dedication here.  (I'll work hard, complete all assignment, go 120%, etc.)
      
      Most of all, relax.  They just want to see that you're going to finish.  Unless of course you're headed for an exclusive school with limited space based on merit and portfolio, in which case, just really pump it up with everything you've done or have.

   The essay is a way through which the college is trying to determine whether it is worth their while to allow you to do the course.
   
   If you have no clue whatsoever why you want to study graphic design, and why you want to participate in that particular course, perhaps you need to be looking at other alternatives to occupy your time, since obviously you have no particular interest either in the subject or in the college.

      Actually, I do have many reasons why I want to study graphic design, and more specifically, why I want to go to this particular school. I was really asking for tips on how I could make my essay more interesting, and to stand out.

         If you do have some clue, then you need to write about what you consider to be valid points to support your application. There is no point whatsoever in getting other people to write your essay for you. Apart from anything else, it is pretty well guaranteed to result in you failing any subsequent interviews, since if you insert other people's ideas in your essay, this will be painfully evident to the interviewers.
         
         Unless the course you are aiming for is an exception, there will be more candidates than places. It is not possible to wing an interview. Bear in mind most interview outcomes are decided within the first 10 seconds or so. Parroting other people's ideas will not give you that extra factor to make you noticeable to the inteviewers.

            I would not "parrot" anyone else's ideas! Have never done that, and I never plan to in the future. I was asking advice, as many Hubbers would have done the process before, and this is my first time. Anyways, thank you, and have a happy new year.
