   I have just come back from the cinema, where I saw 'Iron Lady.' I'm not exactly a fan of the politics of Baroness Thatcher, but nevertheless found myself being very moved by the film, and now see her in a different light.  I realise it is only a film but I think it will greatly improve her image.  I haven't been that gripped by a film in years.

      I  don't know  your age, Muldania, but having lived through the Thatcher years it would take more than a piece of fiction (if she's painted in a flattering light then it must be fiction) it would take a frontal labotomy.

         It is the portrayal of her now, as a lonely frail woman in her late 80s, who is confused and spends her days talking to the ghost of her husband, and who desperately wants to see her son and grandchildren who are too busy to see her, that I found moving.  To go from such a position of high power, to being forgotten by family and the world, and stll grieving for her husband.  It was very sad, and there were several people in tears in the cinema.

      Haven't seen the movie yet but I'm sure it won't change my opinion. She was hard-right, militaristic and divisive for the country. Also as we have seen now, and which was predicted, her economic policies were ultimately disastrous for the economy

   I have read that the reason to see 'Iron Lady' is to see the
   Meryl Streep performance, which is suppose to be exceptional.
   Perhaps she is the premiere female actress or actor as you will.

      I imagine MS's performance is outstanding, she's an outstanding actress, in my humble opinion. Margaret Thatcher on the other hand, imposed irreparable damage on this country. (I'm old enough to remember, which makes me feel quite senile)

      Meryl Streep was fantastic.  If she can have people crying for Margaret Thatcher, she has achieved the impossible.

         I agree. Maybe it would be better described as a portrayal of "career women from the 80's and how their families felt betrayed?" Lol

   Am I alone in thinking that to bring out a film portraying a gaga Mrs T talking to her dead husband is a bit tasteless? I mean, she's still alive forcryingoutloud.
   
   I can just imagine the outcry there would have been in the US if someone had made a film showing a still-living Ronald Reagan in his dementia years.

      Yes, I did wonder if it had been run by the Thatcher family beforehand.  However, the fact that it does portray her in a sympathetic light, will probably be seen as a positive in securing her a more favourable legacy.

   Margaret Thatcher was an evil vindictive bitch that brought Scotland to its knees, the people of Scotland will never forgive her and I for one will never watch the movie.....jimmy

      It could be argued that Thatcher was good for Scotland in the long-term.  It was the fact that she introduced the poll tax first in Scotland, and the fact that Scotland was governed by a Conservative government in Westminster, even though the Conservatives were almost non-existent in Scotland, that led to Scottish demands for their own parliament.  Had she been more sympathetic to the needs of Scotland, there may not be a Scottish government now.
