How can anyone say that religious people can't be dangerous? This is just one example of religious violence.
The individual who wants attention and uses a religious stance to get that attention.... must have some mental aberration, I think.
It cuts across religions. It seems to be endemic in the USA but becoming prevalent across the world. It is often born out of ignorance. Then, when you bring in laws supporting Free Speech, yet do not build the sense of responsibility which that requires, then the door is open for all manner of blind hatred. Add a perceived directive from your god and you have a social disaster in the making.
If something as simple as religious thought sperns such violence, I'd rather stick to being as ignorant as possible. If you look at all of the religions that have been wiped out by established systems, you'll see that the least violent religious groups were the first on the hit list.
I would point out also that Dale Hurd is not without his biases.
Which is why I included more than one link. Islamic beliefs and societies are barbaric and it isn't limited to just Islam. I've seen so called "righteous christians" resort to the same kind of violence, only for some reason the media doesn't cover it as much.
I difference between Christianity and Islam is that the Quran calls for violence while Jesus said those who live by the sword, die by the sword. Violent Muslims are just abiding by the Quran while violent Christians are going against the Bible.
Why should they be able to preach non-violence, while commiting attrocities? I know alot of non-violent Muslims and Christians, yet the vast majority of each is becoming increasingly violent. Why? Why is it the religious that are becoming violent and not those they perport are the source?
I don't think that the violence is necessarily increasing from both religions. Throughout history, violence has been associated with religion. It's because of an innate need for dominance. It's the result of brain-washing, too.
Indoctrinate, subjugate, destroy. The credo of any good religion.
Religion tends to be that way. A faith in Jesus is far removed from indoctrination in religion. I mean a real love for Him, not just saying one has faith in Him.
There are many levels of vioelence, it's just a shame that most of that violence comes from religious groups. These are people that preach all sorts of tollerance and love, yet their willing to kill at the drop of a hat.
Violence defines the human race. I know lots of violent people. Thats what cracks me up about these forums. Most of the people act as if they sat at the feet of Jesus himself, the righteousness is so thick. Ot he opposite, some people act as if they witnessed the Spanish Inquisition, they hate xtians so much. I say bullshit. First chance they get they will act as violent as any other human.
You must live in a different world to mine. I find exactly the opposite, I am surrounded by peaceful people where violence on the streets, in the clubs, bars and any other place is so rare you have to go to an American bar to find it, here in China.
Violence came forth because of the sins of Adam and Eve.It is something that don't have to be. The intellect changed in the spirits of humankind when sin was committed against God and humankind had to depend on their knowledge which brought the house down. And PEACE and WISDOM HID THEMSELVES. Now.......the world have to go back.
Any member of society who has been indoctrinated may become violent. Irrespective of their religion. Indoctrination is indoctrination.
Violent people are going to found in every group or creed be it philosophical or political or cultural. Some will find their perspective group to be more willing to support their violence while other groups will come to shun them.
Well, I didn't go to the link. I guess we all know there are some radical Muslims. I'm afraid I agree with kirstenblog. Violence is a fact of life. Take away any variable that anyone claims causes it and those prone to violence will continue in the same vein. Religion is not the root cause.
When Paarsurrey finishes his book, he should lend it to you.
"Religion poisons everything" - Hitchens
Paar is writing a book? That might make for an interesting read.
But, I don't know that I would necessarily agree that religion poisons everything. I'm not into absolutes. Maybe it poisons 99.9%?
Religion is not poisonous, it's the patrons and matrons that do the poisoning. Religion is just an institution, it's the members of certain aspects of that institution which create said poison.
No, he said he was reading a book by Hitchens.
And the witch hunt continues...

That is the sickest thing I have ever seen
In all honesty, yes, that is dreadful, so sad, so horrific for those poor human beings, so ignorant, so judgmental.
Before anyone condemns people in Kenya for doing such a thing, just remember the lynchings which have taken place in the United States of America down through the years. Remember the witch-hunts in medieval England and Europe. All done because of belief systems. The flames were fanned on by crowd hysteria, a phenomenon which EVERYONE of us is capable of in similar circumstances
I can not imagine running out of ideas to kill anyone.
That is the most disturbing example of religious violence I've seen in a long time, puts religious doctrine into perspective.

Arjuna (Hindu) fought and killed his family at the direction of his God, Krishna.Joshua (Jewish, Christian) killed the women and children of Canaan at the direction of his God, Yahweh. Is it ever OK to fight or kill based on your religious principles?

Started a thread about some Muslims who were trying to speak out against religious violence. Entered into discussion with someone, and we agreed more Muslims should speak out against extremist violence. Then we got onto the subject of Christian religious violence. I said I also condemn Christian...

Forgive me all hubbers out there, I want to ask this same question on Christianity being a violent religion, as was put forward on Islam by one of the hubbers to see the kind of reactions coming through.

Do you believe Islam is a violent religion?

Do you believe your religion could be viewed as violent?Several religions are accused of being violent, yet followers feel that they aren't. So my question is - do you believe your religion, whatever religion that is, could be viewed as violent? If yes, why? And if no, why not? PLEASE be civil, and...
