When we don't have anything important to say, we tend to talk about ourselve's. We talk about the things we do and eventualy, work our way down to talking about our social status. We tend to talk about how enlightened our teachers are and what not. In the end, it's really only a way of feeling important. We strive to fit in, in whatever circle we feel comfortable.
But why is it so important?
Because it's miserable being a Billy-no-mates.
It's not about not having friends and living like a monk. It's about centering the mind through silence. Quiet the brain down, don't feed it distractions. The brain is in control of the functions, we are in control of the mind/emotion.
Few people are actually in control of their emotions (or even their mind, for that matter).
If they were, we would not have so many court orders to attend anger management courses. We would not have people killing themselves for internet stalking or for being teased at school. We would not so many millions on anti-depressents. We wouldn't have road rage with someone attempting murder for being cut off in a lane change.

Why do people talk about the deceased with glowing reference at funerals? It seems to me that every funeral I've been too, it doesn't matter what the deceased was like, they turn into absolute saints upon death. Why is this. Even if they were a complete prick in life? I have heard...
