Most Witches have choosen or been choosen by an animal familiar. Mine has always been the cat. Even now that I have allergies in my family I still associate my familiar with the cat. What animal has become your familar and how did you choose that particular animal or did the animal choose you?

I have always loved dogs.  I do not adopt or buy my dogs, they all come to me through friends or family.

I find that I understand and actually like dogs over people.  So my familiar has to be my dog.

I would say so. It is quite amazing how animals choose us most of the time.smile

Completely true.   Five years ago when I lost my hound dog I swore, never again would I go through that.

I went to my friends house, his dogs started fighting over me and never stopped even when I left.

I got a call two days later asking me if I wanted the youngest.  he was beautiful and my dream dog so here we are.

The dog is my familiar and I think they chose me. All my dogs have been rescues, and one of them (who died a few years ago) always did rituals with me, and I even got her to meditate with me a couple times. We just had a bond, we knew what the other was thinking, or so it seemed. I'm trying to work on a new relationship with my current rescue, but having built a relationship with Lady, and losing it, I find myself comparing my relationship to Sekhmet (my new puppy) to the relationship I had with Lady and I know that's so unfair of me. I'm trying hard to break myself of it, and love her for her, but it will take time. And I know I won't have a deep relationship with her until I can do that.

Beautiful story of Lady. I am sorry for your loss. Your new puppy will be just as wonderful!!! And will love you unconditionally just as Lady did. smile

I'm not a witch, but if I was I would think it would be the cat. I don't.have an affinity for them, but they have an uncanny love for me. I went with a girl once to pick out a bengal cat. There were probably 30 cats in the house. I sat down and was immediately covered in cats. They ignored everyone else. That's the normal reaction of a cat when I walk into a room.

You do not need to be a witch to have a familiar.  You also do not need to be a witch in order to practise the craft.

I hope you own a few of these fine feline friends, you are meant to.

Emile R you have a gift. A deep connection  with animals is not often found with cats. I once had a cat that would sleep in my room and on my extra shoes at the front door until I arrived home. She very rarly left my side when I was home and if I had taken her with me she would have come along happily. Enjoy your connection!!!

Reality Bytes absolutly you do not need to be a Witch to have a familiar. Although it is most associated with the Craft. Also you do not need to be a Witch to practice the Craft as some one who is not Christian can at any time pray to God. Althought because of the nature of what the Craft is about it might be wise to be cautious if one does not know what one is doing. smile Know what I mean?

I do know what you mean.   One does not need to declare themselves a Witch to practise.  Even Christians that light candles as a prayer for a loved one is performing a ritual.
