"You work 16 years, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt"
Remember that song?? Look at this! And wonder why we are angry.

You're not wrong, for the last ten years we have produced less job than there are people entering the job market, as a result people who are laid off are lucky to get a minimum wage job afterwards, for many people it's a choice between minimum wage and unemployment and our minimum wage is as shown woefully inadequate. According to Wikipedia around fifteen to twenty percent of our population is on minimum wage or slightly above, which means somewhere in the area of thirty to forty percent of the working population of the US is earning about minimum wage, there can be no doubt it needs to be raised.
It's called supply and demand.
Anytime I have worked for low wages, I left for better wages, when there are no better paid jobs, I either stayed or started my own business.
I bought low cost record players (remember record players?) and sold them as 'second hand' (no guarantee needed) or pretended they were stolen, and made a few dollars on each one, sold stuff door to door, did a multitude of boring things to make some cash.
If there are too many folks chasing too few jobs, what other answer is there?
Pay folk NOT to work?
We may all want a better world, but thank your lucky stars you live where you do.
In SE Asia, where I live, the minimum wage is less than $250 per month.
Those folks could get more, if you folks would pay more for the goods and services you get from here.
Swings and roundabouts, and time we all woke up to the fact that there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Ahhhhh, but they don't have to pay better wages now do they?
Supply and demand is right: for every job supplied, there is a demand for 6!
And of course we want to pay less. That's another dog and pony show.
Well I don't. I want to pay more for electricity, if it means it's green. I want to pay more for products if it means they are made here.
And I don't mind paying more to live either, except that it all goes into the pockets of money-hungry ceo's!
There is plenty for all...it's our consciousness that needs to change.
BLAMMO! 2-by-4.
Company stores, company houses, company towns and huge factories didn't work out very well in this country. China would be well advised to read up on the history of the industrial revolution and take steps to improve factory conditions there in companies such as Foxconn, Apple's manufacturer there where the factories are huge, the hours long, the pay low, the dormitories and food are basic and there is no social safety net. This is partly what allowed Apple to pile up the incredible sum of $98 billion in cash.
I wonder why these Foxconn workers aren't smiling?
Apple got rich because rich folk wanted to buy their vastly overpriced product for style choices, and yes we are ALL rich by comparison to the workers you imaged.
I recently looked for 'happy Indonesian workers' fact is that's a hard search to find.
If we want a comfortable well paid workforce worldwide, then step aside and let the eugenics folk kill 6.5 billion people to get to a number that they like 500 million folk alive on earth.
That is the unfortunate bare truth.
The equation does not work with a society that wants cheap imported goods and high wages, yes it would be a start to bring manufacturing back home, but if you did that, those Chinese Foxconn workers would be back to starving and the 'developing world' would stop developing.
I know the problem, but cannot see the answer, but suspect that killing ALL the Rothschild's would probably be a good start!
Just a couple of thoughts. First, I don't see hardly any minimum wage jobs. Mickey D's, temp agencies, ditch digging - they all pay above minimum wage. It's not as big a thing as the graph would have you believe.
Secondly, there is no real reason that a healthy adult should have to work for minimum wage. Those are unskilled jobs that anyone at all can step into. If that is the best you can do, better get some skills of some kind. Minimum wage isn't meant to support a family (and why else do you need a 2 bed apartment) - it is meant for the beginning entrant to the job market. Find a roommate and share some costs until you can find decent work.
Yes--they worked it quite nicely.
Took the jobs away--got tax breaks to do it: Now want to come back with no taxes applied to them: No union representation for the workers: people are so desperate they will take any job: grown people with kids and tons of life experience work along-side teenagers for 8 bucks an hour.
Cut social programs, so single parents don't get day-care help....and voila.
Permanent poor.
BUCCOOO profits for corporate America.
Low to No taxes on the corporations.
Wider and wider gap between rich and poor.
"And those of us whom have worked 2 to 3 jobs at once, pay taxes, the wealthy become wealthier by our broken backs."

The CEO of Gravity, a credit card processing service, cuts his personal pay from a million dollars a year to give the minimum wage earners in his company $70,000 a year. The workers describe the raise as freedom, family starting and house buying ability. Could this be something to spark the economy...

Once again there is a call to raise the minimum wage.Now....common sense and a little education will tell you that when you raise the minimum wage, prices go up to compensate. Also, you stand the chance of having a nice little spike in unemployment from the smaller businesses that can no longer...

CBS News reports that the Brookings Institution [1] found, "America's unemployment rate is at a half-century low, but it also has a job-quality problem that affects nearly half the population, with a study finding 44% of U.S. workers are employed in low-wage jobs that pay median annual wages...
