      It's amazing what can pass for "rational analysis" today.  Apparently, millions of the poor lacking access to health care is an "abstract concern."  Somehow, the Catholic Churche's backwards inane policy if not covering birth control is defensible.  And speaking honestly with the Russian President, as ALL politicians do, since they have to deal with a bigoted majority when determining what to and not to say, is not a crime.  Obama was also speaking about nuclear DISARMAMENT, but knowing the Republicans would demagogue him and say he was increasing the probability the U.S. would be attacked,  he was simply saying that real action would have to wait until after he was re-elected, hardly the same as Tony Blair being the puppet of Bush and supporting the imperial war for oil.

      I always enjoy reading Peggy Noonan. She has a crisp, conversational style that is easy and pleasant to read. In this particular piece, she does a decent job of articulating some of problems faced by President Obama; but I was disappointed to see how many of her assumptions and conclusions went unsupported.
      
      Did you notice that she admits the Republican candidates running for President have been unable to raise issues against the President that are very “compelling” or “brilliant”? She also alludes to, but doesn’t identify, perceptions about the President that are “hardening positions and leading to increased political bitterness.” It left me wondering if she just expects us believe such perceptions exist because she says they do.
      
      She writes about (and these are her words) “the open-mic conversation with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in which Mr. Obama pleaded for ‘space’ and said he will have ‘more flexibility’ in his negotiations once the election is over and those pesky voters have done their thing.” At this point, I became very concerned about Ms. Noonan objectivity. I heard the tape and I don’t remember the President referring to the American electorate as “pesky voters.” Do you? Apparently, Ms. Noonan wants the American electorate to think that he had. I also wonder if it was a Freudian slip to refer to the incident as “bush-league.”
      
      I believe this article will resonate with anyone who already dislikes President Obama and is willing to overlook its flaws. Ms. Noonan describes the President’s effort to find common ground as “devious.” She trivializes his attempt to express his empathy with a grieving family; then fabricates a fictitious response and puts it in quotes as if the words had actually been spoken. (Now, tell me, how devious is that?) The years this administration devoted to recovering from the “Great Recession” are a “waste of history’s time” according to Ms. Noonan.
      
      I could go on but what would be the point? I truly admire Peggy Noonan’s skill as a writer. When you strip away the references to actual events, you are left with innuendo mixed with unsupported personal opinions. And, let’s not forget that she is the former speechwriter and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan, a columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and an applauded Republican political writer.
         
      Thanks again, SJ, for the link. It was a good read even though I know who pays her salary.
