      Hi rexrider,
      Firstly welcome to hubpages.
Hubpages is more like a community, where people help each other out. The comments option is useful for people to express their reaction to what you have written, but when they start following you, it means that they liked what you have written and are looking forward to more of your work. The common practice here is that if someone starts following you, you start following them back as a courtesy. That way you get notified for all new hubs written by them in future and you can also go back to their profiles and read their old hubs.
The immediate result  of following each other's hubs is that you end up reading each other's hubs, thereby adding to each other's page views...which ultimately has a bearing on your hub and profile score.
      Hope you got it?
You have already published some hubs and have a few followers!!! Did they start following you or did u start following them?

No, this is NOT common practice!

You are supposed to follow people whose work you wish to read, regardless or whether or not they are following you.

From what I have learned reading these forums, if you follow too many people too fast, this will impact negatively on your hubber score (the number you see on your avatar).

Permalink is a method for selecting a specific forum post.  It's useful if you wish to keep track of posts that are helpful or otherwise memorable to you.  It's also useful if you want to quote a specific post in one of your forum posts (or in an answer or a Hub).

If you follow too many people, your personal hubscore drops. If the score is below 75, any links in all the hubs published by that person are set to being no-follow. This means those links will not be of any SEO benefit.

A very low hubber score may also give the message to people that the hubber concerned writes low quality material and thus people might be less likely to bother to look at that author's hubs.

    Writeangled / Rex,
When I said that you follow someone who follows you, I meant that you follow each other because you are interested in reading each other's HUBS. Not to follow blindly.
I have been fortunate that who ever I follow, return the gesture by checking out my hubs, read and comment on them. Whenever some one comments on my hub, I do the same thing, that is to check their profile, read their hubs, and if its interests me, then I follow them them or leave comments on their hubs.
That's one good way for the community to develop where in you get to know fellow hubbers who write topics that interest you, and also for you to develop your writing skills by reading other's hubs.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Following others is good, best if you're interested in their topics NOT because they are popular or hope to raise your own score tongue going on a 'FANNING SPREE' is generally frowned upon hmm and doesn't award followers in return. Follow only those that are of interest to you and/or complement your own articles smile followers come naturally, you can't EXPECT them to return your fanship.

rexrider, read through these threads to see what has happened with a couple of other Hubbers who had similar experiences.  Their situations and questions, and the comments of other Hubbers, could be very enlightening and helpful for you.  And you can see how their scores have risen after falling (but it does take some time and the right kind of effort).
