My profile score is a 1. Does it go down to zero? It had dropped and just when I thought it wouldn't get any lower... boom!

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that would lower your score. I find it perturbing that I'm not allowed to follow people. I guess I'll just resign myself to the fact that I have a score of 1. LOL

Here is what I periodically do:

          First, I go to: http://hubpages.com/my/activity/hubbers … der=latest

Then, starting at the bottom, I work my way up the list; checking each hubber.

If they have been completely inactive for 2 months or longer, I unfollow them.

I haven't been around here long, but I've never seen one below 30. No clue how you managed to do that. Is any of your content copied directly from somewhere else?

    1. LoriSoard profile image68
LoriSoardposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I did have someone steal one of my articles I had written as a sample for a supposed writing gig. I didn't realize it until I went to post here and it said it was copied content. Did some research, contacted the person's host and it got removed. I also removed the article from here, though, so I'm not sure if that could be it.

It means you are doing something the Hubmonster really doesn't like. Spam, over-following...?

    1. LoriSoard profile image68
LoriSoardposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I don't spam people. Following people might be it, but I really just wanted to support people who supported me. However, I'll lay off following anyone for a while and see if that helps.

  5. Glenn Stok profile image67
    Glenn Stokposted 13 years ago

Lori, You are suddenly following a lot of people. Have you actually read ANY of their Hubs?  When get alerts that the people you follow have published something new, do you go and actually read at least a few of those new Hubs?

If your answer is "no" to either question then why in the world are you following so many people?  How can you keep up with their writing if you follow so many?

OR... Are you doing it hoping that they follow you back? If that's the case, you are "gaming the system" and THAT, my friend, is what is pulling your score down.

      Hi Glenn,

Yes, I've read at least one of their posts and commented on most of them as well as rated, etc. However, it does sound like that might be part of the problem. I guess I won't be following anyone for a while and see if that helps. Urmila, hope you figure yours out soon, too. It's very discouraging.

Thanks to those who've tried to help me. I think it's the following thing. I was trying to be supportive of others, but maybe that was a mistake in this case.

    1. Pcunix profile image86

You aren't "supporting" anyone by following them.

You should follow people you want to read.  Period.

A lot of us hubbers support each other by being friends on Facebook.  We even have a couple of groups where we share our hubs, and other blogs we write.

  7. LoriSoard profile image68
    LoriSoardposted 13 years ago

Thanks so much. I really think that is what it was. I spent the afternoon going through and unfollowing inactive hubbers and a few others. Hopefully it will go up over time. Otherwise, I may wind up with a negative number. LOL

  8. relache profile image67

    Lori,

There are only two actions you can take as HubPages user that will drop your score right down to the floor.  Posting nothing but duplicated content or mass following people.  And since your Hubs aren't coming up as dupes on Google, you can be sure it's from following too many too fast.

Lori, I'm glad I saw this. Mine isn't nearly as drastic but I was at 86 pretty consistently (would love to have it higher) and in an hour's time I dropped to 80. That concerned me. I wondered what I did wrong.

  19. LoriSoard profile image68
    LoriSoardposted 13 years ago

I suspect you might be correct. I'm just not sure what else to tune. I did go through and add summaries and links to all my articles, so perhaps that will help over time. It's weird because I don't have a hub under 50, but my profile is still in the 30s.

    1. Marisa Wright profile image87
Marisa Wrightposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Maybe it will just take a while to build.

As for the following thing - followers used to be called "fans", which made the meaning clearer.  It's not a reciprocal thing.  When you "follow" someone, you're committing to read their Hubs in future. That means you need to be discerning about who you follow, otherwise you'll wind up spending all your time reading instead of writing!

Some people will follow you purely so you'll follow them back - they're trying to game the system, in other words.  Don't play the game!

I have a lot of followers but I only follow a very small number of Hubbers who write on subjects I'm interested in - and even then, I have to go and prune the list now and then to avoid getting overwhelmed.

  20. paradigmsearch profile image60
    paradigmsearchposted 13 years ago

I just now wandered your place and didn't see any problems. Maybe it's just going to take HP a little longer than we thought to move on.

  21. LoriSoard profile image68
    LoriSoardposted 13 years ago

Thanks guys. I do think it is just going to take a while to come back up. Marisa, that is an excellent explanation about followers. I wish that I'd known that at first. I learned the hard way, but at least I'm not at the number one anymore.

    1. wheelinallover profile image78
wheelinalloverposted 13 years agoin reply to this

My guess is one of the things that helped was posting in forums, every time I do my score seems to go up. When there are more search engine readers to my hubs this seems to raise the score also.

Adding Ebay capsules, summaries, and editing hubs seems to have helped my score at times. Writing seasonal hubs is not good for your score, I have a few which are I leave them with the hope they will rank high enough to have readers when the season returns. If they don't I will take them down. In all my time on hub pages I have never seen a score lower than 29. Still haven't as yours is now 53.

  26. LoriSoard profile image68
    LoriSoardposted 13 years ago

I had it at ONE when this forum thread started. I probably should have taken a screenshot. It is almost impressive that I could tank my score that low simply by following people because I thought I was being supportive. Yikes! People here helped me figure it out pretty quickly though, thank goodness. It has been climbing pretty well since, but is still a rather low score.

It looks like the help you have received is working for you. I am seeing a score of 84 now. I took me about 6 months to hit and maintain a score that high. It is a wonder this has been possible since I no longer work 20 hour days.

The sad part is it seems I do my best writing in the small hours of the morning. This has always been done after an already exhausting day running the business. My health is worth more than all the money in the world so I will live with less hours working.

      1. LoriSoard profile image68
LoriSoardposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Yes, the help really payed off and knowing the rules about following, community, etc. I knew good SEO already, I just didn't know Hub Pages very well.

I agree on the health issue. I tried to get a full-time, outside job once. Got really sick and hated every minute of it. Working for yourself is definitely better, but I am considering going back and getting some training to do something else part-time. We'll see.
