Get ready to meet your doom, as us unbelievers are due to be toast. However, if you have a 666 tattoo, you'll be ok!

Hmm.. first the world was supposed to end in Y2K, then last May, then in October, and I guess now it will be this coming June. But what about the dreaded December 21, 2012??

I wish people would be more specific so that I know when exactly I should start preparing. big_smile

I suppose one of them is bound to be right one day?  Think I'll predict 25th April 2018 - all I need now are cult followers and a million dollar TV channel lol

Why not 6/6, or the sequentially elegant 6/9/12? These apocalypse people have no sense of numerical style.

My favorite comment on the current rash of apocalyptomania is still this cartoon explaining the Mayan Calendar (although actually, spoilsport that I am, I must point out that the Mayan Calendar (a) does NOT end in 2012 and (b) did not predict an apocalypse at this time. Not that we should trust the Mayans anyway, since they failed to predict the end of their own civilization.)

Remember, even before the Y2K bug frenzy, there was Heaven's Gate. They all killed themselves in the late 90s because they thought the world was ending and they were going to hitch a ride on comet Halle-Bopp. Their website is still maintained by the few who decided "mebbe not."

A comet that hadn't even been discovered until quite recently. It's good to know cults can spring up at the drop of a hat! At least they could've picked Comet Hyakutake at around the same time; it had a better name.

I wonder if these people just get bored and decide that it would be fun to come up with a random date for the end of the world to hype everyone up- or at least the very gullible people who believe them?

And great cartoon! That definitely seems like a more logical explanation; I think the world has much longer to go than 2012. smile

    Sick, really sick!!

But Y2K "first"?  Not by a long shot.

Someone help fill in the blanks, please--- I remember in one of the Russian novels we read back in high school (by Dostoevsky perhaps?) there was some mention of a doomsday cult -- a group that had retreated into the hinterlands to await the end of the world.  Does anyone else remember that?  These groups have been around for millennia; people like that were mentioned in the Bible too.

They now even have their own TV show "Doomsday Preppers" on the Nat Geo Channel, and there is also a guy who travels around the world making millions of dollars designing and selling underground bunkers to people. I have a customer who is planning just such an installation. It has 2 bedrooms and it's own air filtration and some sort of septic system.  I don't know all the details yet, but it horrifies me.  It's still just a gigantic coffin and no matter how many bedrooms it has, you are still buried alive.

Oh yes, the whole predicting the end of the world thing has been going on much, much longer than the year 2000.

Y2K is just the first one that I can personally remember. smile

    Freaks....every group's got em.

But they don't define the group.

The pure and simple fact that people continue to predict the end of the world and it making it to the news is absurd beyond all comprehension.

The only reason to make it public knowledge or to broadcast it on the new or in any other media source is to spread fear.

    How boring.
