If HubPages chooses your Hub as HOTD because it stands out from the rest, why not get paid for it?

Me neither!  Besides, the whole thing is subjective and chosen by staff for the most part.  It's not as if it's a contest being judged by experienced professionals by any stretch of the imagination.  lol

And dare I say that some of them are not exactly excellent examples of quality smile

That is not to say they all are like that. I have read some excellent hubs of the day.

Yes, some of them are okay, but I suspect some are just to promote newbies, as many of those being interviewed in Simone's blog posts are.  Don't ask me how these are chosen, though.  Nor do i understand how those are being chose for the apprenticeship program, especially those with very little time on the site at all compared to others.

I wish I could answer these questions, but I am such a poor writer that it always amazes me when I reveive a hub of the day... as for the apprenticeship program... I will never be accepted there either....

My HOTD was the one that I kinda facepalm every time someone mentions.  I laughed for hours when it was chosen... as did my hubby.  The only reason I haven't deleted it is because it really is one of my more profitable ones...

It still makes me cringe though.

I'll take the honor and be happy with it if that is all they have to offer. After all, it is what I signed up for - being satisfied with just receiving a trophy. But, yes. It would be nice to get some kind of monetary reward along with the honor. It doesn't even have to be a huge sum of money, just a token amount that adds to the honor of being selected as HOTD. I'm assuming it's simply not in the budget, or they would do it. Right?

  2. Cagsil profile image70

Why should you get paid for something you should be looking at as a honor?

  3. relache profile image72
    relacheposted 11 years ago

If your Hub is that good, the extra traffic and attention you get from being HOTD will wind up converting to either ad money or retail sales.  So in a way, you do earn money from being chosen as HOTD.

If you haven't noticed lately, writers do get paid for the work they put out there, and it sure as hell isn't based on an honor.  Like what?  Trophies on the mantel that gather up dust?  Compliments?  Something to put on the resume?  And in terms of today's economy, "honors" don't cut it when you're trying to make a buck. I'm looking at this "honor" as a professional writer.  You bleed all over your writing, it gets chosen for being the best.  So why not a cash prize?  I'm not talking big sweepstakes or the Lotto, here.  A few pennies is better than free.  If people can get paid for the contests here by being randomly picked, why not be paid for something that is fit to be out there and read?  You get paid in pennies for what you write online.  Why not get paid for a piece that is worth it?

Hub of The Day is very different than winning a contest in that hubpages is paid via advertising to promote contests (i.e. the draino ads, etc.) So that prize money comes from outside of hubpages.

Hub of The Day is a useful tool that benefits the writer because it provides exposure for writers not just on the day their hub won but for a length of time in the sign in page feed... and the hub is cataloged in the HOTD archive. So the hubber is paid in a sense because the reward of Hub of The Day means more followers, more ad views, and promotion of the writer within the community. I have been able to leverage my Hub of The Day titles into paid work outside of hubpages and all of that is enough payment for me. I think sometimes we do not value honor appropriately, but each time I  have been awarded Hub of The Day... I am honored by that action.

Prize money is prize money when it goes into the writer's PayPal account and doesn't take the scenic route to other places where you assume it will build up traffic and sell Amazon items.

    1. davenmidtown profile image68
davenmidtownposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Yes...but the scenic route is often more pleasurable to our human senses unless one suffers from hub allergies and the visual flowers are blooming next to the ornamental grasses or when the online mosquitoes are hungier than the grammar nazi's are... but that happens so rarely here... honestly... :-)

I thought each winner already got one hundred dollars?  Maybe it was just me, but they seemed so impressed with my Farting Stickman page (HOTD May) that they sent me a hundred dollar cheque and a free subscription to SEO Self Abusers Weekly.

I assumed it was the same for everyone.

I have never been selected as HOTD, so I would be happy just to be selected.   getting the monetary amount will only allow me to put towards my business and everyday expenses.

I've been here nearly a year and feel that I'm doing pretty well, but I've never been selected for HOTD. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. With that said I would be delighted for one of my hubs to be chosen as HOTD, money or not. What is your secret, davenmidtown? I know some other hubbers who have been chosen multiple times, too!

    1. paradigmsearch profile image61
paradigmsearchposted 11 years agoin reply to this

If you check the profiles of the winners, you will discover that invariably they all live in San Francisco. That alone, though, is not sufficient. It's the ones that bring a box of donuts to the HP office every once in awhile...

I don't really have a secret... to being chosen multiple times for hub of the day... I really, honestly, think there are writers here who are much better at writing then I am.... such as yourself... Victoria. It is all confusing sometimes too because I will have a HOTD and I wonder why that one was chosen when I had better hubs in the same topic.  One of the things that I focus on in my writing is including high-quality original photographs and I know that from talking with Simone that many hubs are disqualified from HOTD program because people do not cite their photographs correctly... or the photographs that they use do not fit into the size limits of the progam itself. Writers can work on those two aspects to improve their chances. I also know there is a bunch of grief given when people are chosen multiple times which is why I have asked  not to be chosen again.... or at least not this year. I also think that HOTD winners can give back to the program by recommending quaqlity written and well designed hubs for the HOTD program.... this is something I have done for as long as I have been here.

Hey, if you deserve it, which I am sure you do, then carry on getting it.

That's cool, Dave. And thanks for the compliment.  I've read quite a few of your hubs, too. You have interesting stuff. Maybe it's my pics. I know the ones I take aren't always great. I've never understood about what the first pic is supposed to fit. I would think that would be automatic when we put the photo in the capsule but maybe not. Thanks for the response.

davenmidtownposted 11 years agoin reply to this

My rule for pictures is that they should visually represent what I have written. The first picture should be a summary of the entire hub....especially if it is a project type hub. but that is just my rule that I apply to myself...

Thank you for the entertaining (and creative) answers.  I stepped out for an appointment and didn't know I'd be coming back to all of this.  VICTORIA LYNN, of all people, I though you earned a HOTD a long time ago.  Of course, when it comes to writing, you can do no wrong!  PARADIGMSEARCH, I live in Sacramento and two hours from San Francisco.  LOL!  LOL!  Is that why I was never chosen for HOTD?  LOL!  Oh, wait!  That doesn't hold since DAVENMIDTOWN has several.

Aw, shuckins.  My HOTD record holds at ZERO, ZILCH, and NADA for my year here.  It must be my writing, photographs and goofy videos . . .

DAVE, DAVE, DAVE.  Must YOU remind me that I am a complete FAILURE when it comes to basket weaving???  That goes for knitting, crocheting, tatting, etc.  LOL!  DOUBLE LOL!  Yeah, the imitation Miwok can only collect pine cones.  It's the safest thing you can do in a forest other than collect pine needles.

That is a green stink bug, isn't it???

no stink involved in that bug... imitation Miwok... don't go in the forests... the medical marrijuanna growers will shoot you... I have not even brought up crocheting, tatting, or the ect... that you mention... all I am saying is document the failure of experience in a hub with appropriate orginal photographs and maybe two fails make a win?

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS RANDY, I did have a chance to visit headquarters last year, but I'm not one to visit San Francisco.  I don't even remember the last time I was there.  People tend to run over me because I drive like an old lady/Mr. McGoo.  Plus, the visit was only for a couple of hours when it takes me that long to get there and find a parking space.  DAVE, I did have some experience with the pot growers and the mushroom pickers in Del Norte County, but I was practicing my shooting at the time.  The forest was the only place I could practice because there was no established range anywhere.  Yes, I did clean up my casings!  As for figuring out the HOTD writing?  Auuuugh!  Too lazy.  WESMAN, how generous of you to offer your HOTD to someone else.  Are you practicing to be a ghostwriter?  Or do you not want to be bothered?
