Why is it that people tend to dislike those who are better off academically, intellectually, and/or socioeconomically than they are? Is it the crab in the barrel mentality? Is it inherent in the human condition to want others to be the same as they are?
For each human, he is the master of the universe. Anybody superior out there make him inferior, so he resent superior people. He resent the loss of resources he could have got.
Extremely sharp analysis. You are totally on target! The average person is quite comfortable in his/her situation whatever it may be and they view those who are highly successful as somewhat of a threat to their comfortable situation. The latter reminds the former of what can be done to improve his/her life situation. Because the latter improved his/her situation, the former resents this because he/she is happy with his/her comfort zone and to become more successful means leaving his/her particular comfort zone. Many people subconsciously want success but they are afraid to venture out of their comfort zone in order to achieve the success that they want!
People love to satisfy their own ego then to get dominated by more intelligent people. The self ego is what all are concerned to satisfy and whenever it feels threatened by the presence of a superior person around the jealousy and all the negative force stars working rather then appreciating the caliber of the other person. Generally people likes to pity the inferior one and they feel comfortable in their presence and like to enjoy the own advantages rather then to be intimidated by the more successful ones.
I pity people who THINK they are better off than other people.
What is better off in intelligence? It doesn't take intelligence to obtain wisdom.
Academically? To obtain knowlege is free, and makes a lot more sense to do it outside of an environment that suppresses real knowlege and freedom of thought.
Socioeconomically? What is the point of having more than you need? The more you take, the less there is for other people.
Give me a shelf of battered thrift store books, and I have obtained all three. Now I have the time and freedom to explore the world where it really counts, inside, where I can find God.
Well said.
The US does seem rather anti-intellectual at the moment. Personally, I judge people on who they are not what they have or don't have.
Why would anyone spend so much energy caring what random strangers think of some generic educational and/or economic group to which they belong? Did you get wisdom or money on order to be loved by the nameless masses?
Personally I don't face any noticeable amount of ill will for being a middle class person with a PhD. Most people seem to be pretty positive about it. I bet I'd cop a lot more hate on any given day for being illiterate and homeless.

For some humans, life has become boringly routine, but for others, the daily grind of surviving the harshest of realities has become unbearably unpristine. So which kind would you rather live?
