religion - a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons
atheism - the doctrine or belief that there is no God.

    atheism = religion

Not sure if that's correct. With this logic communism, fascism, nationalism, socialism are also religions.

Hell, if you believe this logic, then war on terror, war on drugs are also religions.

Religion - the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods
atheism - disbelief in the existence of God or gods.
therefore - atheism is not a religion.

It all depends on the intentions really. The only reason believers call atheism a "religion," is to attack any rational thought process as no more useful than believing on faith alone. This is intellectually dishonest and yet another reason the belief in a god causes nothing but fights.

You yourself don't see rational, reasonable scientific inquiry as any more valid than irrational beliefs. This is because beliefs come easy, but knowledge takes work and very few believers are honest enough to admit that. Humans are essentially lazy and god belief is a wonderful example of that.

I'm glad you are so certain of what I see and believe. You actually are making assumptions based on some things that you have seen me posting (Which we all know what assuming does). wink

I'm guessing that the thought never occurred to you that in looking at some of my posts here and there that I might perhaps be playing devil's advocate as depending on what is being said. If you look back in some of my other posts I've even taken the side of atheists against some of the things that some of the other Christians here have posted and I have even been told I'm hell bound and a heretic.

But on the contrary, I am actually a big fan of science and scientific research. Science answers WAY more questions than religion does as well as WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY more questions than the Bible does. But even in saying that, I also note that although science does answer a lot more questions than religion (especially the dogmatic crap that gets spewed out), science doesn't answer all questions either. So ultimately (In my opinion) even though it is a lot more rational and logical than religion, science cannot disprove the existence of God any more than religion can prove the existence of God and as such (in my eyes) are on equal footing at the end of the day. It could actually be possible that science actually fills in the gaps that religion couldn't fill at the time (but I've noticed that when I have stated this to some Christians and some atheists both sides were too rigidly stuck in their beliefs or lack of beliefs to even entertain that possibility)

I  am more than willing to acknowledge that I may be wrong in my belief in God (which is why a lot of people would state that I am more agnostic than anything). It is my endless optimistic hope that there is something better after we die that is why I choose to believe. I have no fear of burning in a "hell" that was created to instill fear and force conversion. For me, it's a win/win. I live a good, full, happy life   free of the burdens of certain doctrines that stress others out. I do believe that God created us (irrational, I know wink) but he empowered us to think, act, and operate independently of him.

But again, this is just my opinion and belief based on my understanding and my attempt to piece stuff together as best as I can with my understanding (which is limited to what I can gather out of science books as well as the 2,000 year old book of myths that I don't take total stock in).

I think you agreed with me - yes? You just reinforced my "assumption." You are just mouthing empty words and saying you like science, yet immediately discarding it because "it cannot disprove god."

LOL that it is me not being able to entertain a possibility when I disagree with you. This is why belief in a god causes so many fights. You are always right when you believe in god - no matter how many times you pretend you are open to being wrong. That is the real problem with beliefs such as you hold. The massive cognitive dissonance. Even though I can point out that you just contradicted yourself here - you will not see it, because god is blocking your view. wink

Oh so now you are psychic enough to read minds? If you look at it, I ultimately was equally dismissive of both because I said that religion does not prove God either..

When I mentioned atheists  not entertaining a possibility, I was not referring to you. I was referring to others that I have spoken to outside of HP. There went another assumption. "I am always right when I believe in God"? There goes another assumption. Why must you lie on me..That's like me saying you are always right when you believe science.

Calling my words empty?? really? my words are no more or less empty than your own. Others words always sound empty or hollow when held up against your own.. Thank you for continually showing me how close minded you truly are.. You have built up this intolerance to others opinions and holding your own is the indisputable truth.. More power to you.

At best, anything anyone says can only reinforce an opinion, but that does not change it to fact.

Specific religions tend to have whole books of rules that they agree on.  Atheists, like myself, have nothing in common with other atheists, apart from that we believe that there are (almost certainly) no invisible supernatural forces at work in the world.
