I watched a video a while back that was about a study on the differences in men and women that involved how the genders use maps and directions to find places in different ways. Men are better at reading maps, forming a general picture of the whole in their mind. Women are better at following specific directions, as in a series of one landmark to the next to the next. The men see the whole, while the women see the details. Working together, the two can get to or find a location better than separately.
What other things like this does anyone know of, where the two genders working together can do things better than alone? (Besides making babies, that is;)
My experience is that men are much better at compass directions and have a better sense of direction. They know that home, for instance, is that way better than women do. And just as you say, women are better at landmarks and their directions reflect that: "Turn left at the white house", rather than "Go north on route 66".
There are actually quite a few sweeping generalizations like this; it will be interesting to see what people come up with where two different types make for a better job.
Can we deviate from the background of Map Reading? No?
A man will insist on reading the Thomas guide or the latest GPS technology. A woman will resist learning how to read it or operate the technology until she absolutely must use it. A man will practice reading/operating years before they get lost, to avoid that from ever happening. He will know his route and proceed only after knowing exactly how to get here. Not a woman. She will set out in the general direction figuring she can wing it all the way there.
A women will finally refer to a map or technology after she doesn't know where the heck she is or what direction to go... after exhausting all other possible sources of information: her friend on the cell phone, the handsome stranger at the gas station, the grocery clerk at Von's… The best solution for a woman is calling the people at the intended destination and getting directions from them.
But, maybe smart phones have changed all that.
It has changed, but only for women.
Which may be another aspect where the two working together does better. The man, familiar with a GPS and knowing how to use one will do so. And when the device tells him to turn and drive down the railroad tracks the woman will quickly call a friend and ask if that is wise. When the answer is "No" they can both sit in the car and argue until the train solves the problem for them.

Are “Men from Mars and Women from Venus”?Although I don’t believe in stereotyping, I think John Gray’s book poses an interesting question. Is there anything you wish your opposite sex would better understand about you or your own gender? I would have to say that compartmentalizing how...
