Recipe Hubs

I'm completing my second recipe hub.  Why can't we use more than one recipe capsule per hub? I could have used three.  One for the pie rust, one for the cranberry-cherry filling, and one for the walnut crunch topping.

I am glad you asked this question, because I was thinking about creating some recipe hubs just this morning. I browsed some of the top recipe hubs just to try to get a feel for how to.

Reading @CuAllaidh comment below. I would suggest adding the other recipes in each recipe hub in a group, or text links.

Yes I could create a new hub for the crumble topping, but the second hub would be very short and omitting the second recipe would make my initial hub too short as well.  Using a text capsule solves the problem very well.  The viewer can't see the difference.  I just didn't understand why only one recipe capsule per hub. Now I understand it is so google will pick up recipe info. If there were two recipe capsules, I'm guessing google wouldn't know which to use..

As a reader, I think I would be annoyed at having to jump from page to page to finish making the recipe, especially since HubPages does not allow users to open a new window when they click on a link. As a cook and/or a reader, I would prefer having the entire recipe open on one page.

      Catherine,
Have you tried it? Did you try using extra text capsules instead?

Before the recipe capsule was invented (which is a recent modification), everyone used text capsules.  There's nothing stopping you from adding all the recipes to make a complex dish in one Hub if you want.

Yes but the one recipe capsule limit is still an issue without any logical reason for the limit. I agree that having more than one recipe on a page is often a good thing.

I know I can just use a text capsule which is what I did, but why have a recipe capsule if it can't be used consistently?

You know what bugs me about recipe capsules? It lets you post like 5 ingredients, then you have to start adding an additional ingredient ... thingy.... trying not to get too technical.

If you have a lot of ingredients, it becomes kind of a lengthy process. It'd be cool if you could fill in a blank telling it how many you needed... or add 5 at a time...

Hm ... that's odd. I have a hub with multiple recipe capsules in it.

Is that because it came over from Squidoo that way? I don't remember if I added them after the fact or if the hub was like that when it was transferred, but I've edited it multiple times, and I know I've had to edit recipe capsules.

I know I have another hub that has at least two recipe capsules, and I could swear that I added the second one after the transfer. Once I added the rating thingy -- the star capsule -- to the first one, I THINK I was then able to add the second.

Then again, I haven't started a recipe hub from scratch here, so I'm not sure.

Any recipe lens that came over will have all the recipes in it but they aren't hub modules, they are text modules.

In edit mode, in the hub I was referring to, the top part of each recipe does say "text" but the capsules below say "ingredients" and then "instructions."  In other words, there are several groups of these "text - ingredients - instructions -cook time" capsules.

I agree it would be convenient and would also make sense to be able to add more than one recipe capsule per recipe hub. This is something that was asked for by many members back when the recipe template was introduced. For whatever reason, admin chose not to make that change to the recipe template. Maybe it is time to revisit this request.

Something else I would like to see would be an easy way to re-order the ingredients. I like to list my ingredients in order that they are needed in the recipe, and when I make a mistake in their order on the ingredients list, it is a pain in the you-know-what to reorder them.

I agree. In my case I wanted to add an instruction to the middle of the list.  I couldn't do it so I had to tag it on to an existing instruction even thought I thought it was better as a stand-alone instruction.  I guess I could have just redone the entire list by cutting and pasting, but I had spent hours and hours doing the hub and just didn't want to put in the extra time.

This is interesting in the Learning Center about the Recipe Capsules http://hubpages.com/learningcenter/Recipe-Hub-tips

"If you only enter your recipe information into normal capsules, searchers will only see your recipe Hub’s title and summary clip in search results. If, however, you enter your information into Recipe Capsules, searchers may also see a photo, your recipe’s star rating, you’re recipe’s cook time, and other snippets of information that will make them more likely to click through to your Hub."

Thanks for the info, colorfulone.  Maybe that is why there can only be one recipe capsule per hub. It makes sense now.

I think I tried to do a recipe once, but got frustrated and gave up - though that would have been at least a couple years ago.
However annoying as it might be, see it as an opportunity to create multiple hubs that compliment one recipe, and give links to the hubs to create each thing. You can even put a little note as to why you're doing it that way, as a sort of retaliation gateway.
But if they're all quality recipes, then the hubs should be quality, and it'll get you good views and a larger collection of quality hubs. smile
But I agree, it is silly that the recipe hubs are done that way.

It's my brain that is rusting. The pie has a crust.
