Some of you already know this. For those who do not, there are two ways you can reply to a forum post.

    1. When you click on the "reply" button directly at the bottom of a forum post, the entire post will be imported before your message appears.

With very long forum posts, this unnecessarily wastes a lot page space and scrolling down time before anyone can read your reply.

    2. You can avoid this unnecessary repetition by using the "Post a Reply" button at the very bottom right of the page instead of the reply button immediately below the post. Using this second method gives you a blank canvas for your reply without repeating the entire post you are replying to.

The first option is useful if you want to reply to a specific selection of a post. In that case, when you get to the reply box, click on the blue text "import and edit the quote". This will import the entire quote but now you can edit it, i.e. delete most of it except the specific selection of the post you wish to reply to.

The result is a shorter, more to the point reply.

Remember, if you don't want to see endless repetitions of long forum posts, use the second option at the bottom of the page.

Using the button at the bottom of the page makes a post that is out of order when you view the forum in threaded view.  In threaded view each reply is nicely indented under what it is responding to and the posts you are replying to are not copied in your reply.  That's why using the reply button at the bottom of each post is preferable to using the button at the bottom of the page.

And replying to the post instead of the general thread also makes it easier for people to see who/what you are referring / responding to.

This is my reply to Calculus-Geometry using the first option (reply button directly under the post). It imports Calcuus-Geometry's entire post. In threaded view this post intended as a response to Calculus-Geometry appears (neatly?) under Millionaire Tips's post. Also, in threaded view I have no option to import and edit part of Calculus-Geometry's post unless I use html manually.

Right, but since your comment appears right after the post, it is clear what/whom you are referring to.
Ah, but then when you switch to chronological, the entire post is copied.  I think this is why I wind up having such big quotes on my posts. I didn't know I was quoting anyone, much less a very long post.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  I know there have been threads about this before, but it would be wonderful not to see an entire post repeated on so many replies.  You've made a very helpful thread.  I think there are many who must not know how to use the import and edit the quote feature.

That is so helpful, I never knew that before and I have been here two years!

That's exactly what I figured Rebekah. Since most of us use the Chronological page set-up, let us hope that this thread will help reduce the endless repetitions of huge posts on the forums.
