Hi, I'd appreciate advice on how to increase traffic to my hub. As a teacher and a parent, I have experience with both sides of the education process. I hoped readers would find interesting reading about factors in schools that help our children learn and the conditions inhibiting their education. My three children have attended large public schools with heterogeneous populations- - some recent immigrants with low- English proficiency, some low income with breakfast subsidy, average students, some high achievers.
I got laid off by a New York City high school when the principal fired the most recently hired and/or those with graduate degrees who were higher on the pay scale. I had only worked there for two years, but thirteen teachers in the English Dept. were fired, as well as many from all of the other departments. I've been substitute teaching ever since.
Can Hub members please recommend improvements?
Thanks very much.
Melinda
I looked at your profile and saw no hub listed with that title.
Sorry! I changed the title to "Can Core Curriculum produce world leaders?" In response to one hubber's comment, I edited it to make it more concise. Hope you find it and give me your opinion. Thank you!
The basic fact here is that public school education, worldwide, doesn't acknowledge, encourage and inspire creativity. Secondly, they dismiss the simple, and obvious fact that human beings have a spiritual side to their existence.
I agree (you may be surprised, Das Engel).
I had a look at the hub but, to be honest, it was way too wordy for me and, like a distracted school kid, my attention wavered. Besides I'm in the UK so the US system is a mystery to me.
The last two of our children have been homeschooled using the autonomous method. In other words, they taught themselves while we just shelled out the cash to facilitate that. Eldest of the two is now in college, having been accepted a year early and has also skipped a year. So, from our point of view 12 years in school would have been a waste of his time.
Thanks, DasEngel, for your comment.
The Core Curriculum emphasizes frequent testing prepared by Pearson and Pearson materials geared towards preparing for the tests. Test days take time from teaching, and teachers must justify creative projects not tied to Core Curriculum testing.
By spirituality, do you mean an appreciation for ethics, morality, belief in a Supreme Being? Middle school students study principles of major religions, but the Core Curriculum focuses on "career and college readiness."
Put an eagle (freshly caught from the top of a tree) into a tight, inescapable cage. The feeling it generates inside the eagle is basically what spirituality is all about.
A trapped eagle in a cage can't reflect on spiritual readings to console him. Spirituality connotes uplifting, life affirming feelings, rather than controlling, destructive, or hurtful actions.
Like in medical profession, one first needs to understand the disease before curing it. If we're to help the eagle, we first need to understand what's going inside them. Because we may not necessarily be able to immediately release them from the cage.
If we could, we could do without spirituality.
It seems to me that your hub does not answer the question posed by either the current or former titles. Perhaps you need to break this into a number of different hubs each with a clearer subject.

What do you think the biggest problem with our current education system (k-12) is? Why does it seem like the US is so "dumb" compared to other countries? What are we doing wrong?

To clarify the intent of the title, I think the current CRT in the news is a `movement', rather than an academic concept of study that CRT was intended to be.As an off-shoot of the theory of Critical Thinking, the concept of CRT makes logical sense—as a concept of academic study. However, in...
