To be honest, you want a small car with a small engine, else the insurance will be very expesive, I'd recommend a Citroen C1 or Toyota Yaris.

As the parent of two teenagers one driving and a daughter just waiting until I say its okay to get her license and frankly I would love to put her in a bus or armoured car for my piece of mind, but in all practicality that's not going to happen.  It's not that I don't trust her but I don't trust the other people on the road.  Today we deal with alot of road rage.  Teenagers don't have the driving skills or reflexes to handle some of the stunts those crazy people pull such as cutting people off, tailgaiting or riding slow and slamming on the brakes.  To get back on the subject a car with the safest reputation in crash tests is what we are going to get her.

My first came with 74 horsepower by the time I started driving the hand me down car it felt like 50 horsepower on a good day. I would recommend getting a car that is easy to maintain, does not boast a lot of power and definitely does not seat 8! Distraction is what causes accidents.

Something with practicality and style, so that you're both happy - and most importantly fuel economy and safety.  May I suggest the Toyota Yaris?  Whatever you do, don't buy her the car she probably wants, it'll be the least practical and most expensive.

All I know is my daughter will be driving a big butt Lincoln Town Car or full size Ford F150.  I have seen those little cars in accidents and all the highway patrol does is call in the coroner, not my baby.
Screw the gas mileage and insurance, the extra money saved on little cars that are cheap to insure isnt worth your daughter.

Getting your teenage daughter her first car presents problems to say the least.  I was told as a teen wanting the new mustang, which by the way came out that year, that I could either have a car or a college education.  I chose the education.  I did not have a car until I could afford to own one and take full responsibility for it.  I know that this sounds a bit harsh this day and age, but teens will learn a whole lot of responsibility if they are the ones footing the bill for one.  I did not suffer because of this.  I did get to drive my parents car and that was fine with me.  I know that teens today think they are really not cool if they drive their parent's car.  They will live through it.
