Who do you think could emerge as a strong leader in the GOP to restore the conservative agenda?
It's clear to me as a GOP supporter that we've run amuck a bit and lost some of our sense of direction as a party—there's a real lack of REAL conservative republicans. We need someone who can be that leader, who can restore republican ideals, and restore America's faith in the people's party. Lots of names have come up like Sarah Palin, and Mitt Romney. But I'm not sure they are the answer. Who do you see in the party who has the power to lead us back to our principles right now, or do you think that instead we'll see a strong third party conservative movement in 2010 and especially 2014?
I'll agree with you to some extent that the two-party system is fairly well flawed. Still, the two party's do have very different ideologies. The conservative ideology fits most of my belief as to how things should go, so that's the side I tend to take. But let us not forget that The People choose what happens. We've never seen a third party emerge that was strong enough to capture the deep interest of the American people. That doesn't mean it can't happen. That doesn't mean some haven't come close either. As I said, the GOP is failing. It's lost much of its conservative base. John McCain was the last nominee—not a conservative by any stretch. So, we do need a restoration of conservative ideals in the party, and we absolutely need someone to emerge as the leader of this restoration of core values that are the GOP.
Might I add that right now there is, actually, an interesting third party movement underway in this country. There's no question in my mind that Obama is failing as a president and he's losing a large part of his own voter base. (And I'm not taking that stance just because he's a democrat and I happen to lean right). He's as left as any president has ever been. Bush was not very much on the side of small government and so many republicans are left going "huh?"
The third party movement is a very conservative one. If the next republican nominee in 2014 does not quite fit that conservative mold, republican voters could swing to the third party candidate, provided he or she is viable. The independent voters, I think, have already been swayed to the right due to Obama's policies, and so in the 2010 election I am convinced that the republicans will control the House and the Senate, and either a GOP candidate or a strong third party candidate will win the White House in 2014.
At this point, it is hard to say who should/will run for the repubs in 2012. I agree that Palin is too polarizing and despised by the mainstream media--and we know they NEVER fight fair. Newt looks pretty good, but he is also hated vociferously by the left. I guess we need to pay attention and search for a true conservative to hold the banner of WE THE PEOPLE!!!
I agree that this is a waiting game. Scott Brown's senatorial victory in Massachusetts has sparked a national political revolution. Strong leadership will emerge because the people demand it.
Former GOP Senator from Nebraska, Chuck Hagel? General Colin Powell? Old fashioned conservatives with integrity are scarce as hen's teeth in the Republican Party.
It's not going to be Mitt Romney. He would have to answer too many questions about the MA healthcare system that he initiated. Honestly, I don't see one candidate right now. Paul Ryan (WI?) looks promising. But, he lacks name recognition and probably isn't ready. It won't be Palin because of what everyone has already stated. There is still plenty of time for a candidate to come forth. Right now, I don't see anyone that I would be willing to cast my vote.
