   The answer to that question is "It depends on the situation in which it is applied." Affirmative action worked quite well in bringing about an end to longstanding hiring discrimination. Once companies, police and fire departments are integrated, continuing to apply affirmative action giving preference to minorities becomes discriminatory.
   
   Affirmative action has also brought about integration at formerly lily white universities, law and medical schools. Opponents of affirmative action at their alma mater are frequently the ones who support the recruiting of convicted criminal athletes who can barely write their names (slight hyperbole). They also support preferences for children and grandchildren of alumni. Also, at many if not most state universities preferences are routinely given to children and friends of state legislators who are in a position to influence appropriations for the university. Complaints about these forms of affirmative action or preferences are unusual, but the populace howls about small preferences for inner city minority applicants handicapped by their education in inferior public schools.

   Affirmitive action is reverse discrimination due to the fact it does not base being hired upon who is best for the job but by what sex or race you are.  If a company does not have X number of women or X race they can not hire a cuacuasion male no matter if they are the best for the job or not, they have to hire a minority. 
   
   Part of why some companies do not have the best working for them.
   
   For instance, firefighters, would be required to hire a female, even if she is not the best qualified for the position, mentally or physcially...   who do you want to carry your child down a ladder, the lady who barely was able to lift the minimium or the guy they didnt hire who could lift 2 times as much as she could.. 
   
   now of course if the lady was best qualified, sure hire her..
   
   there were already discrimination laws before affirmative action.. affirmative action was just like many dumb laws,  it is like the hate crime laws, hate is not a crime, when you take action and harm someone.. that is crime and is punishable.
