Actors of today are lacking talent in maintaining their personal lives and reputations. WHY????
Some actors especially older ones have good skills. Now it seems talent is lackeng, But the drive to be noticed is ahead of the talent. Get pierced in the belly or a tattoo on the face or drive drunk. I know if the talent out ther was worth our memory we would not have TMZ or entertainment shows out there showing us what the talent pool does when not supervized or drunk/drugged. Please just give us a memorable role in a good movie and keep your partying self out of the limelight. Toby Mcguire is a good example to follow. Film movie-make money-go home and behave. They need referees.
ExplosiveInk,
I think part of what we're seeing here represents generational differences. The actors of the Baby Boomer era (born between 1946-1964) honed their acting skills and took pride in a job well done.
The newest Millenial generation actors (Lindsey Lohan, Jersey Shore crew, etc) is different. They care more about getting noticed. They are attention-starved young people tweeting their most personal thoughts and actions for the world to see.
Knowing that they have no talent, they resort to media hype and attention for survival.
That's my take on it, anyway.
Too much money, too quick, in an attention-starved population that has become, through the years, VERY dumbed down. We've raised the bar so high that nothing is shocking anymore, and that just means things get crazier than ever before, and increasingly so.
It seems like a lot of today's actors are famous for being famous. i.e. children and siblings of famous actors. They probably don't know how to hide or be cautious with the paparazzi or news.
Another thing to factor in is we get our news these days. We find out about things minutes after they happen. Also, so many people are trying to get that shot or little snippet of what a famous person just did, that will make them a little bit of cash.
The world is much smaller than it used to be, and maybe this generation of actors will be examples of what not to do to the next one.
Today's actors are no better or worse than yesterday's actors. The key is that people are all being forced to adopt values that aren't truly their own. No one would have given a crap 20 years ago, I still don't give a crap because I'm not "Socially Programmed"........most people do because that's the "message" they are getting (not to mention all the pain for resisting).
While the other answers had a high probability for being the most likely cause of the problems we see with stars I have have two other possibilities as I don't think it's any ONE individual problem causing the phenomenon.
Along the same lines as what MJFande said is that there are more media outlets than ever. And their sources are more present than ever. We, as humans, enjoy seeing famous people get in trouble and careers come tumbling down. So more and more shows/web sites pop up to bring that stuff out. Because it is reported on more than ever...we find out more than ever. So perhaps many, many sortid things happened in the past but it never was brought to the world's attention.
Another factor is that a ton more people are famous that never would have been due to all of the new avenues to become famous. The Internet and services such as youtube can make semi-celebrities out of people that would have never been seen by more than 3 people only 15 years ago. And then the advent of reality television. I enjoy some of it but the problem is that people will lump them in as celebrities of today as perhaps Cary Grant was in the past. But these people today have no 'training' on handling life and work separately. Especially since reality tv isn't acting...hence the name of the genre. They get used to carmeras wanting to record them acting as they naturally do. They aren't taught to maintain a private life.
