What are the basics of SEO that every website owner should know?
Good SEO Requires Patience , So many people give up on SEO work after a few months. In my experience the big wins come from a long road of real work.
Good thought John. Yes, SEO is a long term strategy. It will take a long time to go from page 10 to page 1-2. But with a well thought out plan, it will prove very beneficial in the long run. Pay per click advertising is a good plan for the short term. Learn basic html code for your website. (title, meta, alt) Also, establish presence on social media sites such as facebook, twitter, myspace and linkedin.
Search Engine Optimisation is based around your use of “keywords” and your website’s link popularity. “Keywords” is an industry term to describe the queries we use when we conduct a search, for example “website hosting East Kilbride Glasgow”. The search engines then categorise websites based around their relevance to a particular keyword. The search engines analyse your keyword usage in the following elements of your website (not an exhaustive list):
•Domain name
•Page title
•Page URL
•H tags (h1, h2, h3 etc.)
•Page content
•Image alt text
•Internal links within your website
•External links to your website
After these basics are down you then only need to watch your competition and beat them at the SEO game!
as few people already said:
Patience and hard work will produce experience.
And experience is everything in SEO world.
Basics of SEO that every website owner should know are as follows :
Title Tags
Title tags are the most important ranking factor on your page. It's critical to get them right. Proper title tag strategy is comprised of three factors:
° Prominence. The closer your keywords are to the beginning of the title tag, the better.
° Proximity. Your keywords should be grouped together, in the exact order that you anticipate someone will enter them into a search.
° Density. Repeating your keyword in some variation later in the title tag will often lead to improved rankings. But don't overdo it by keyword stuffing your title tag. Stick to no more than one repetition.
Meta Tags
As we've covered many times, the description meta tag is the most useful. (And, the NOODP tag is now useful for reasons that we discuss in this month's updates section.) All others are basically useless in terms of having any effect on search results or link descriptions.
The point to remember is that the description meta tag often provides your webpage's description in the search engine results pages (SERPs). Therefore it's important to use it to provide a compelling description that motivates people to click your link within the search results. This factor is far more important than any ranking boost that keywords placed within this meta tag may or may not provide.
One more thing I don't see mentioned here is that search engines are very bad at understanding Flash websites. With a few partial exceptions for particularly well-coded Flash sites, most search engines see only a "black box" when looking at Flash. This means many of the really snazzy websites out there (often built for photographers or restaurants) are fighting an uphill battle to even be indexed by search engines at all, much less actually rank well. A combination of CSS and JavaScript can usually accomplish the same effects as a Flash website, especially with the advent of HTML5, and is much better for SEO.
Having a proper meta tags, choosing the proper and competent keywords, and patient since it is not easy to put your site in the top of the SERP.
Everyone has their own opinion. Because Google does not reveal their algorithm. Now Google like Latent Semantic Indexing. It get tougher and tougher to beat Google. I think they make it that way so you will PAY them to run Google Ads.
I do this for a living and I can tell it is not easy anymore. Those days are long gone.
The biggest thing to know about SEO is to make sure it is focused more on your visitors than the search engines (ie. create great content that would be enjoyable for a person, not SEO optimized to where it sounds strange) and to do things in a natural way (ie. not building 100 links every month exactly or a huge burst of them all at once).
Proper selection of keyword, competent meta tags and have unique and fresh content in your niche is the very basic of SEO.
This is the basic things. Besides these, they should also know some basic knowledge of Google analytics and PPC compaign.
The basics of SEO?
Choose keywords that people are using at the search engines.
Put your keyword in the text that will appear on the search engine results page, ie. page title, page description and URL.
Put your keyword in the text that appears on your web page. Keep your keyword density to about 2%. For example if your text is 600 words, use your keyword 6 times. Once in the first sentence, once in the last sentence and four times in between. One of your keywords should be a link to another page.
Make sure your spelling is correct.

Some basic things you need to know about SEO are:
1. Choosing the right domain name for your site - you need to do keyword research and find keywords with high in demand and low competition. Of course it must relates to your niche.
2. Put keywords in main title of your site --> same as in domain name.
3. Define your meta tags. It is all about your main keyword and couple related keywords. You can find them at Google Adwords.
4. Spread out your main keyword two or three times in text body of your site and also couple of related keywords.
5. When promoting your site don't use your url. It better to use your main keyword as a link to your site and do promotion on sites with High Page Rank.
I hope this will help you.
Best wishes!

Contents are the best in SEO that every website owner shoud know...

The first thing you have to be good at is keyword research. For every page on your site, you have to make sure that you are targeting profitable keywords - keywords that fetch you good amount of traffic from search engines yet not very competitive, so that you can rank with minimal effort. If you get this part right, then other parts of SEO becomes easy.
Unique content is the first necessity of SEO and for more information visit the Shard Design.
Well the answers have changed a little bit now that we are in the middle of Google's war on spam. Some of the basics we recommend are now going to take a little longer to complete and even longer to see benefits.
Still of course you will need sitemap and robot txt file on your site as well as get your site verified via Google Webmaster Tools.....can't believe how many people ignore this simple and critical step! It shows you everything you will ever need to remain in good standing with Google.
Of course you want unique and well thought out Titles and Descriptions for each page. Please don't start the title with your company name as Google reads left to right like humans and the terms furthest to the left are the focus of the page.
Keep adding unique and valuable content to your website that engages your end user and has value to THEM. Don't write for the search engines, write for your prospects.
Publish content on web2.0 sites like hubpages, delicious etc! Don't load your content with links, instead write content that other users will want to share and like. We recommend using mostly your company url and only about 15% of the time using a text link!
Also, know what version of your url is getting link love. www., non www. etc are all looked at by the search engines as unique url's
Every site owner should know that Monitor where you stand, Keywords, Link back to yourself, Create a sitemap, Search-friendly URLs, Avoid Flash, Image descriptions, CONTENT, Social media distribution, Link to others. It would be useful to them and if wanted some more information than I would like to recommend you to www.higherthan.co.uk.
