Yes it definitely an important part of online marketing. SEO has two parts
      1- On page Optimization:

Make a content exactly related to your website. Use your keyword in the content. H1 heading for it, use h2 tag for inner heading.

ALT text for all images you use, try to use optimal images. Don't put external links to your home page, make inner links properly and each page must have  index page link.

Similarly so many thing, you can use to make optimize your website.

      2- Off page Optimization

      Article Writing and posting
      Directory Submission
      Classified Ads posting
      Social bookmarking
      Press releases distribution etc....

The basics of SEO will basically always remain the same. If you are talking about your on page SEO then here are some basic tips. They even have word press plugins to help.

Keyword should be in the URL, TITLE TAG, META DESCRIPTION, HEADER 1, 2, and 3 in the post, ALT TAG IN IMAGE, and should be used throughout the post for a keyword density of around 2.5%.

Keyword should be in the first and last sentence, and you should have at least one bold, italics, and underlined keyword through out the post. Post should be at least 400 words and should never be over 1000 (you can make a another post of page with that information and have something else that can rank/interlinking posts)

You should usually link to another related page on the web, (an authority on what you are writing on) and you don't have to give them you anchored text url.

SEOmoz is a great place for beginners to learn more about SEO.

The first step in SEO is doing your keyword research and understanding the importance of using the right keywords. If you just blindly write articles and hubs and randomly come up with titles, you are not going to achieve good rankings. They've got be targeted, hopefully in a sub-niche that does not have a tremendous amount of competition.

There are so many places online where you can learn about SEO. I recommend start off with your keyword research. When you have your keywords you can then do your onsite optimisation to reflect your target keywords. Make sure your website is search engine friendly then start building quality links and your rankins will improve.

Everything starts with keyword research. Find long tailed (3-5 words long) keywords and be specific. There are plenty of tools out there that will give you search volumes, and you can find your own competition...but a great free tool is using google suggest.

Before you start thinking about keywords think about the type of people (or types) you want to attract to your site, the goals they will have and how you are going to help your visitors achieve them. Only then will you have a starting point to provide usable content and research the most appropriate keywords.

There is a simple answer which often amazes clients of mine. Especially in Europe where people believe that complete website can be 20 pages or 30 pages. The answer is one word: CONTENT.

Expand daily. Aim for one new page a day, all year and read Vanessa Fox, Matt Cutts and Webmasterworld.com/google.

Keeping learning and adding content for a year and you will rank well, for ever.
