   One of those cheap netbooks. they dont even have a disc drive or anything...really cost effective if you just need a word processor and a web browser

   10 years old and a laptop for school ? At 22 I must be kind of old fashioned to use pens and paper, well they are more useful during class. But if you he really, truly needs a laptop, being 10 years old a netbook is good enough, it's small and gets the job done. You can get one at every computer store at around $300, they are pretty much the same regardless of the manufacturing company. Still pen and paper are better, at least until, hmm,  high school or uni.

   I'd wait until your student is 13, or in 8th grade.  Using the family computer with restrictions (time and gaming) is better for a young kid. At 13 the student is more independent and hopefully gained some self-control as to using a computer unmonitored, plus you can get a nicer laptop that will see them through high school. A MAC would be a good choice.

   My 10 year old has my old iBook and loves it. It's the 12-inch, so he can carry it around easily. It has everything he needs, plus it's pretty nifty looking.

   Well, in my country we have Magalhães, it is a government project, every child under 10 have one. It costs something like 300 dollars.

   I would say a netbook, you can find one for less than $250. The brand isn't really important, most are based off the same design. Just make sure its running either Win XP or Win 7 for broader compatiblity with programs. Matter of fact Tigerdirect.com has one for 220 i believe.

    Its just a wasting of money if you buy laptop for a 10 year old pupil it is not necessary to his studies.

    Best buy usually has some decent laptops for $300-$400 that are the ones they're trying to get rid of.  My first 3 laptops came from that table.
    
    I wouldn't buy a Mac for them or anyone unless you're A) Loaded (they're expensive and you can get the same specs in a Dell or HP for 1/3 of the price), or B) The 10 year old is doing something like graphic design or film editing or music production.

    Netbook is the best one. It comes around 350$. Give the kids limited and restricted access to adult content sites, accompany them when surfing or chatting. They are too young and need one to ask. And keep in mind that the purpose is educational aspect.

    Student needs only Laptop with MS office and other educational software and net connection. I think you should go with basic computer which is available easily.

    Just because it's for a 10 year old does not mean you want to get the cheapest thing possible. I would recommend getting him the cheapest computer with a dual core processor and a cd drive.
    
    I have seen a scenario play out more than once:
    The parents get the kid a netbook, the kid loves it for a bit. Once the fun where's off, he starts to realize it's quite slow and just puts it with his other forgotten toys. Same thing with the dual core
    Smaller children tend to be very impatient, especially when it comes to computers (hell, even adults get super impatient on computers). A dual core won't cost you much more, in fact when I was still in retail, I remember seeing a few week specials on 329.99 and 349.99 toshibas that had dual cores. They had decent build quality, only 2gb of ram, but hey it gets the job done.
