What books did you read in high school that you would eliminate for having no educational value?
Everyone has to read books as part of their English curriculum, and I doubt anyone would argue that some of the books were utterly useless in terms of literary value. Everyone has a list of books they wish they didn't have to read. So, what's your list and why did you choose those books? Would you want your kid (or current students) reading those books? Why?
Ok great book and great movie, but Of "Mice And Men", no educational value to that!
I teach English, and I've seen plenty of poorly written books over the years. That said, every book has educational value. We all need to ask ourselves what we're bringing to the texts; this is as important as what the text is bringing to us.
That being said, I'd be fine if I never had to read Ethan Frome again.
We hear of hard workers and intelligent students punished in subtle ways for their work, but when punishment extends to forced reading of below-grade-level materials, it is a sad day in education. read more
I'm tempted to say Shakespeare's plays about Macbeth, the Henrys and Richard the Third. There is precious little historic value in them as they extol the Lancastrians and needlessly blacken Richard as well as Macbeth. He should have steered clear of trying to flatter the Tudors and Stuarts, sticking to 'light' issues such as Romeo & Juliet and his sonnets. Dickens' books did have historic value as a social comment on his own time, which he understood only too well, but he didn't need to tie the reader up in knots trying to thread their way through his 'civil service' English!
