Can I ask for a sign to confirm or deny where God wants me to serve as Gideon did?

I read your post from about 6 months ago asking if Gideon was right in his asking for signs when Jesus told the Pharisees not to request signs simply to strengthen their faith.  I was just licensed for placement as a pastor and am trying to figure out if it is God's will for me to accept an unpaid outreach position at a small church? I can work bi-vocationally to supplement the income so that is not a concern but can I ask God to confirm if this is His will by giving me a specific sign that is beyond a shadow of a doubt from Him? What are your thoughts?

I personally think that you should just do what ever you feel is right.

One thing I remember from college, a Jesuit priest told me that "your deepest desire is what God desires for you as well". So if you wanna do the outreach work then go ahead.

You never know, the outreach offer might have been the sign and you're just looking for a reason to say no. Then again you might also really not want to do it and you're just having difficulty turning it down. Just go with you're conscience, pick what you feel is most correct and stand by it.

Fast and pray to God >Is 58.
Make no decision out of pressure.
Be lead by the peace of God.
Not everyone is called to be a pastor and those that are called to be a pastor God should be leading them and directing them. They should be filled with the Holy Spirit and know the voice of God.
Only God and tell and lead someone into what He has called them to do. After God reveals His will and call on one's life He always will confirm it with 2-3 witnesses that line up to His word.

Fast and pray in Jesus name only God can reveal this to you.

If you read the entire account of Gideon, you'll see that God had already made His will known. Gideon chose to not take God at His word and insisted on tangible evidence that God in grace gave him. If you are seeking God's direction, trust Him to lay His desire on your heart. Once you're sure you've heard His voice, obey.

Of course, Jesus even said "Ask".

    Luke 11:9
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

I believe Jesus told the Pharisees not to request signs because they did not believe. I am not sure that any amount of signs will cause someone to believe. But, because you DO believe, you are asking your Heavenly Father for guidance, acknowledging Him as the supreme creator of all and the Lord and ruler of your life. I believe by asking we are making known to Him that we trust Him, we believe in Him, and that we know He loves us and wants the best for us.

Now having said that, I also believe that you will get an answer but remember to test the spirits to find the truth as our enemy, satan, the devil, will sometimes disguise himself and seem to be that which he is not, after all he was an angel and he is sneaky! Especially for those who may not know the voice of God all that well.

    So I say ask.

    Blessings.

One thing often overlooked is that Gideon first worshiped the Father and also offered sacrifice. He did this before he asked the Father to show it is HIM.
