It has to be the wheel...
...without it, nothing else would work.

I'd say that the greatest invention created by man is the domestic utilization of fire. Fire allows us to cook food. It kept early men warm, gave light, and is used to mold tools.

I really think the greatest invention of man is the garbage bag and the garbage can. I know it sounds silly. However, imagine a world without those two things. It is a simple invention but is one the most useful thing man has invented.

    "Tomorrow."

Have you seen it?  What did you do there?  Who did you see, "tomorrow", what did you and your lunch mate talk about "tomorrow"?

"Tomorrow" does not exist in reality.  It is a wish for the future , beyond our control.  To think that we can plan for it, itemize it hour by hour, meeting by meeting is a facet of our imagination.

Because, it reflects our minds is what makes it  the greatest.  We have not seen it, we can not touch it, yet we all speak of it, dream of what we will be and will do there.

    Tomorrow............

Even in this world of fast moving and rapid technology, we still think in terms of the the gadgets that we will have, "tomorrow".

It is in fact, a day, that never comes.

Yet, we believe in a day, beyond this one, and we have named it.............tomorrow.   Our single greatest invention.

language - this allows for coordination and compassion

number systems - this allows us to operate on the larger scale required by cities.

specialization - The fact that some people can focus on one task and others can focus on another means that we are more efficient. (imagine if you still had to grow your own food, and build your own house, and make your own tools, and cook your own food. You would just suck at everything.)

tools - as in, using a sharp stick or rock.

The joke answer is the second wheel - the first wheel wasn't much use until someone invented the second one and thought of joining them together!

Seriously, I would say language. Without language there would have been no civilisation and very little effective education. It was language first and foremost (including imagry or pictorial language) which enabled us to progress after being stuck in the stone age for hundreds of thousands of years.
