What are some tricks for photographing people who are not very photogenic?
What angles or lighting tend to work best? I know this sounds terrible lol - Many lovely people do not like how they look in photographs so I thought it would make an interesting question (or hub idea)
What always makes the trick is to take as many pictures as you can from all the angles eventually one pic out a hundred will be nice.
Always at an angle. Like 90 degrees angle.. usually works well.
It depends on many factors, such as body type, wrinkles, angles, perspective:
Some tips are; if the subject has a thick body type take photographs at a higher angle ( your camera is higher than their face) this eliminates or rather hides any fat buildups under the chin and under the arms.
Use a longer lens and shoot from about 25 feet to encompass the subject but do not go in close; this eliminates small details such as dark circles under the eyes.
Use diffused light; this avoids harsh shadows and at an angle, never from overhead.
Use a softening filter; this eliminates or hides small imperfections, age spots etc.
If the subject appears to be tense, have them close their eyes, tilt head downwards, take two deep breaths and return to the pose, then take the shot quickly; this relaxes the facial muscles.
Shooting down from the top of the persons head instead of from an angle shooting upwards...don't know if that makes sense...but it eliminates the double chin look...it tends to make the person look thinner whereas shooting from below can make even a thin person look like they have flab under their chin.
