What makes you NOT tip your food server?  Do you lower their tip if you didn't like the food?

My wife used to be a waitress, so she always insists on a 20% tip. However, i feel that this is unfair as it rewards bad servers the same as the good ones...and I am not a Socialist. Therefore, when the meal is complete, each of us rates the server on a scale of 1-10. We then combine the numbers and that number becomes the percentage of the tip. For instance, 8+8 will equate to a 16% tip.

Thank you for your feedback!  That is a really interesting way of deciding how to tip!  Sounds good too...I know...it is irritating when us ex and current food servers insist on tipping well even when the service isn't that great...it is like an unspoken code of restaurant workers...I agree tho that if the service isn't good, the server shouldn't get a great tip!

15% is the going rate on tips for food servers. If I get truly bad service, I will lower that below 10% but if the service is exceptional, I may go as high as 50% of the tab. If I frequent an establishment where I get to know the staff, I can generally count on great service in return for a great tip. If you go through a fast food window on a constant basis, it may be a good idea to tip your cashier to share among the rest of the crew so you will always get your order correct; just let them know who you are at the speaker.

This may sound funny, but to me a tip is a tip not a monetary award. That said, I'm a little funny about it and silly to the waitress or waiter I'm sure. I give them a 'tip,' which may be advice, compliment, stock tips, or whatever. Again I say silly of me, but if the server doesn't offer genuine care or service I don't 'tip' them. However, from a respect of the industry, economic times, knowledge of those who make a small living from tipping I always leave a financial tip usually 15-20%. But, if I didn't value their service I don't 'tip' them. dumb, eh? A personal thing, huh?

I've been a server a couple times in my life, so I do not blame the server for the quality of the food. I tip good unless the server is rude, does not bring my drink until after my food arrives, or never comes back to ask if I need a drink refill. Also, if he or she does not pre-bus my table, I might leave a smaller tip, unless I can see that they are super busy or if they were very friendly.
