How do you protect your writing or property when you put it on line?

I love to write especially poetry but I fear to put it out there because of my work being stolen.  I find it ironic that I would wind up on Hub Pages where there are so many creative writers, it is encouraging.

I use this on every Hub:

and then follow it with the date I wrote it.  I also regularly google my articles to make sure they haven't been stolen.

I don't take any steps to protect my work - I can't imagine anyone would want to steal it!  Having said that, if I did manage to write a great creative piece, I would be looking to copyright it.  I imagine there are plenty of sites that give advice on this, but how in reality you can police the Internet so as to catch plagiarists, I don't know.

Hopefully someone else will be along soon to tell us how!

As far as I am concerned, and I quote, "Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery." In other words... I am not concerned. I am on this site because I wanted to share my poems with others. I sincerely doubt if I will ever do a book or anything anyways. There have been greater writers that have published books of their poetry and as good as they are they still have most of those books. I guess it is because there are more poets than there are people that read poetry.

i know just what you mean...i to find it ironic to end up not only willingly writing here...but thoroughly enjoying myself while doing it. when I first started writing, I had plans to sell, or at least attempt to sell my scripts and screenplays. I was highly secretive with them, only letting family and trusted friends read them. but then i realized, in all honesty, i know me...i seriously doubt i will ever go anywhere with what i have written...would i rather they sit around gathering dust or get out and be read by others and enjoyed? the answer was simple...i would rather them be read. if someone does steal something.....well, maybe i will get to see it on the big screen one day. i will know in my heart that was my work or idea. since my main goal is not about money...i am good to go.

I feel that I don't own anything that is not residing on my own website. I don't own blogs or social networks that I participate in and I have no control over what goes on so when I contribute I have to believe that anything can happen and I have no rights whatsoever.

Everything you read on the internet is copyrighted.  Just assume that and go from there.
