Have you ever denied giving approval to Fan Mail you received?
Does it reflect negatively upon you if you don't approve someone's Fan Mail?
Nope, but then again I'm rather new and haven't received much as of yet. I wouldn't see why you'd deny fan mail unless you dislike the person sending it. As for reflection one you, no it is not negative, as the option to deny it is given and it is well within your rights. Good question!
I agree with Steve. I really don't see much point in denying fan mail, although I did just join yesterday! I would be interested to hear from anyone who has done so.
My thanks to Steve and Samantha for responding to my question.
One reason for denying approval of Fan Mail would be because the person sent the Fan Mail for the primary purpose of boosting his numbers, not because the person liked your background or cared about what you wrote.
The only time I disapprove fan mail (and comments too) is if the person seems to be advertising. So if they write really long comments or fan mail, and include links to their site that doesn't really add to the topic I am writing about, then I will deny the comment or fan mail. They can advertise on their own site.
The only time I deleted fan mail I had originally approved it, though I I didn't understand the comment at first. The person had said "what's with your pic?" Then the person who sent it to me started posting spam comments about pictures I use on my mystery hubs which apparently are halarious and I realized that the fan mail wasn't actually fan mail. That's when all my comments were switched to morderate.
Search engines tend to look at your "neighborhood." You can't control who links to you, but linking to (or approving) a known spammer who posts with non-related comments and/or website links erodes your credibility. If someone comments and the spam filter activates, experience has shown that if I paste the comment into Google, I will see the exact comment displayed multiple times on many different websites. The search engines then go into a "birds -of-a-feather" mode and downgrade your content. If someone is posting the identical comment in multiple places, why would we want to provide them "free advertising space" at our expense just so we can claim that someone recognized our efforts? BUST'EM.
Actually, denying fan mail shows you are active and discriminating.
I have denied fan mail that asked me to become a follower of the person who left it. I have also denied fan mail that was gibberish and made no sense.

I would like to see an indication on the Home Page (I use the standard) if someone leaves fan mail (or joins as a follower), a notification similar to comments left would be nice. You typically do not see this, or at least I don’t, until you open the fan mail box in “my account” or happen to see it...

I'm reading an awful lot about Hubpages at the moment and while a lot of it is going in, not everything is and I'm certainly not very good at being able to reference back to where I read it. Frankly it's all very new!One thing which concerns me is fan mail. I've got a vague recollection of reading...

I just got my first Nigerian scammer in my Fan Mail! You know the one, the long sob story of how someone has died and left someone money which is stuck in a bank and the writer would be very grateful if I'd help out by yadda yadda....I must say, I always thought fan mail was limited to a few...

I do a fair amount of suggesting editorial changes to hubbers when I feel these may be helpful. I despise the challenge prompts testing whether or not I'm a person. First of all, my vision isn't exactly eagle acute. Second, if one letter or number is wrong, the mail won't send.I appreciate that I...
