Does a college education provide the same value in job & wealth opportunities compare to the past?
The quick answer is no. With the elevation of graduates over the recent years, the fight to get a good job and succeed has become mucher harder. The growing population has reinforced it along with a higher level of unemployment where almost everyone is looking for that BIG job opportunity.
Depends on the field. In the industries I've worked in, I feel like it's becoming more and more difficult to progress in your career if you don't have a college degree these days. With so many more people having bachelor degrees now, the real differentiator is having a maters' degree or beyond.
Chiefmomofficer, I believe you are correct. The value of a high school diploma say when my father graduated HS seemed to have the same value as an undergraduate degree. Now it does appear these degrees are a dime a dozen. The real differentiator does appear to be a graduate degree to compete in jobs that never required an undergraduate degree. What next, a PhD to compete for common jobs?
The big demand now seems to be for technical skills - both STEM degrees, and vocational technical skills that don't require a degree.
Hi woodamarc!
Well, first of all it depends on what you mean by 'college education,' believe it or not. In the United States, in my view, we still have not dealt with the fact that we had an education 'bubble' in the 1950s and 1960s. It was a collision between a flood of New Deal G.I. Bill funds and a higher education infrastructure that seems not to have been updated since the 19th century, believe it or not. If you're interested, I wrote a hub about this....

Well things change and over the years the value of the college degree has eroded as well. It is important but experience is vital. So get both and continue to work!

There's a lot of talk about education. Get a college degree and you've saved the day. It's the end-all and cure-all. A formal education is critical to your sustained achievement. But is the bachelor's so super, man? Not a lot of surveys going out to grads asking critical questions about degree...
