How long has the Internet been in existence?

The Internet is fairly a new thing to humanity as a whole and the whole existence of such, does anyone have an accurate measure as to when it all first came into existence, and add if you like which governing power, company or authority was responsible for such.  Last but not least you can also add as to when it was first introduced to the public if you wish.

The world wide web was officially launched in 1990, but that is only part of the internet. The internet was officially launched in 1989, but its origins can be traced back to 1969.

In 1982 the  idea of a world-wide network of fully interconnected TCP/IP's came to be but it was the late '80's that the commercial ISP's started off.

The original and official start of the Internet is debatable and depends on how you define what the Internet is. However you define it, I believe that the Internet was first made available to the public in the early 1990's, even though national and international computer networks already existed. So, the internet like we know it today is not more than 20 years old.

Unbeknownst to Al Gore the  (1970's) DARPA   (Defense Advance Research Project) was working on the 1st electronic transfer of information intra- computers which led  ultimately led to email. The military was using primitive email in the early 80's.  Companies like Hewlett Packard had their own intra company email in the mid 80's, email and the web as we know it was introduced between 1992-94.
