Would you name your pet after a literary character?

   Would you name your pet after a literary character?
   
   We already have  2 literary-named cats, Pip (Great Expectations, Dickens) and Paisan (Lords of Discipline, Conroy) and we're about to get a puppy. I like Othello, or something else literary, but my hubby thinks maybe we should go a little more traditional. What do you think? Literary or not, and what would you pick?

   I've heard a lot of unusual names at the dog park.  Shakespeare is a very cute name for a pet... don't you think?  There are a LOT of great names in literature!  Sure, why not?

   I don't see why not.  Looks like you're already on a great theme, but let the appearance of the animal influence you, I say.  My kids named our cats some pretty unbelievable names.  The first batch was Ronaldinho, Coco, Kafu, and Figo (soccer players, primarily Brazilian).  The next batch included Eddie Murphy and Tito.  Good luck and have fun!

   My cat is named after Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird. Most times I just call him Boo.

   I always go for the more original names over traditional ones. Dr dolittle had a few too... Jip (a dog), Dab-Dab (a duck), Chee-Chee (a monkey), Polynesia (a parrot), Gub-Gub (a pig),  Too-Too (an owl), the Pushmi-pullyu, and a White Mouse called "Whitey".

   We have named many of our pets after characters in books, etc.  Currently have Tinkerbell, Bella Swan Cullen (Twilight Series), Strider (Lord of the Rings), Bellatrix (Harry Potter) and Skye (Tamora Pierce books).   Thats just the current ones.  We had a Golden named after one time Laker Basketball coach (Pat) Riley.  Also other characters from Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. 
   
   Like Othello for a name, maybe for a Bulldog   Pippin (LOTR), Captain Jack, Forrest and Jenny (Forrest Gump).  Shakespeare has many names that would be fun and different.
   
   I have a thing for Australian Shepard's and the next male I get I am naming it Hondo (John Wayne).

   Pets can only really recognise single syllable names. If you name a dog 'petunia welcome snowflake in the mountains', it won't have a clue when you call it's name. Call it Jack and it will come running. Try it next time you see a dog. Call it over using the name Jack. It will come.
   Pip is a good name for a dog. Easy to shout it and it is another word that almost sounds like a bark, like Jack.

   My cat Pumpkin was named that because when I was a child, I read a book about a girl having a lot of pets in her basement, and the second one she got was a small multi-coloured cat named Pumpkin. My cat matched the description, and that was how she got her name!
   
   I definitely say go for it! There are so many books, genres and therefore name possibilities to choose from. Have fun!
