Why do people equate IQ with inteligence?

   Why do people equate IQ with inteligence?
   
   Although the term includes inteligence in its title, it really is only a way of measuring how we think.  A person who knows, say, nuclear physics is not neccessarily more inteligent than another who knows how to survive in the wilderness, is not the inteligence manifest in a different way?

   Well, people like to get high marks to show off to others. Any piece of paper that shows a statistic or a percentage that may objectively prove that a person is superior in some way to another person will be promoted by the former person. On the other hand, dogs and cats are stupid and know how to survive in the wilderness. Survival is also a primitive instinct of the tool-making hairless apes, known as Homo Sapiens. Ancient humans and contemporary humans have spent a great deal of time figuring ways to develop our brains through mathematics and philosophy in order to become something superior that could eventually do anything--fly in space, clone animals, or create nuclear fusion. Some well-conditioned minds are capable of this sort of work. Yet most of us are mere survivors who use what is available to us; whether it's flipping a light switch or eating termites in the forest.

   I don't know because some of the smartest people I know are the dumbest and some of the least educated are the smartest. It has to do with common sense, I think.

   Like Old Empresario says, we like to show off in some way against others. An IQ is just one way of doing this, sets in school, jobs, ranking, pay, houses, cars - we use whatever possible item we can acquire to show we're of a better stance then the one's we surround ourself with - as we've done for generations.

   I think (as a generalization), people with higher IQ's tend to seek out knowlege, and as a side effect tend to be more knowledgable. Also, I think people associate high IQ with famous people who are known to have IQ's such as Einstein.

   An IQ is a measure of intelligence. Intelligence is not a measure of knowledge, which is not the same as being smart. To be intelligent is the ability to interpret information or gather information. To be knowledgeable is to be full of knowledge, literally, to already have learned. To be smart is to use your knowledge practically. IQ tests are really inaccurate because the majority measure how smart you are not how intellectual you can be.
