What is the best family vacation with older children?

Where do you go when your kids have outgrown Disney, and need a little more adventure?

I would look into one of the National Parks, such as Yellowstone.  There are a lot of amazing sights along the roads and if you are willing to get out and hike, there are even more things to see that most people never get to enjoy.

I was a teenager the first time I went to Yellowstone and I have taken my kids there a couple times since.  They have even been asking when we are going to go again!

I think it completely depends on if they are outdoorsy kids or not. If they like the outdoors then I would pick one of the National parks to tour or go on a whitewater rafting trip.

To clarify for some of you - Yes, we are an outdoorsy family, although we are not all equally rugged - I love the National Park ideas smile

We bought a camper a couple of years ago.  We had a great summer trip tubing down the Niobrara River in western Nebraska and camping at Custer State Park in South Dakota.  Nothing beats family time camping (especially in a fully stocked camper with air!).

Depends on the age... I know after i outgrew disney, i enjoyed going to orlando studios. You wanna try something really fun, Any weekend in October for Halloween Horror Nights at Orlando Studios.. That is always a lot of fun. In the meantime... fun things for teens.. Beach hotels, cruises.. Always fun to do those.

The best family vacation with older children hinges less on the "where" and more on the "how." It would be best if they would be allowed to participate in deciding where to go. If that's a foregone conclusion, then involve them in planning out the itinerary of the vacation. Don't just give them a schedule, involve them in coming up with the schedule. It also becomes an opportunity to let them read up on where you're going.  If you got teens or older, it's likely that they would like to go off on their own. Designate days where you all go together and days where it's free time and everyone can come up with their own itinerary for that day.

Forget Orlando. Come to Naples. If you are thinking a summer vacation, motels and travel are half price during the summer months. We have a beautiful beach and a water park that is 12 dollars for the day. We are an hour from Miami and just west of the evergaldes, which offers airboat rides and a Seminole Indian reservation. Check out my hub on family fun in Naples.

Anything that involves adventure and the opportunity to meet or hang with others near the same age. It's helpful to have each family member write an idea on a paper and toss it into a hat. After dinner, read each one and try to incorporate an element of each into the perfect vacation for your family's budget.

Yellowstone is amazing!  There is so much territory you could spend weeks there.  We enjoyed it with two preschoolers, but I imagine we would have a blast now that all our kids are big enough to hike.

Family vacations are a great way to bond with each other. A great place to vacation with older children is northwestern Montana; Specifically, Glacier National Park. The park is such an awe inspiring place. There are plenty of outdoor adventures you can do as a family at Glacier National Park and in the surrounding towns such as Kalispell, Columbia Falls, and Whitefish. There are several lakes to explore, horse riding trips, quaint little small town shops, and the people are so incredibly genuine. You can go into a hardware store with your dog. You can see the Northern Lights crystal clear. You can go tubing down some of the most clear rivers in the country and maybe even the world. It's such a memorable place to go that it allows your family to connect on levels that is unexplainable. The fresh mountain air must flush out some of the distracting and negative things we face in our day to day living. It's definitely a different change of pace that is refreshing and meaningful.
