Is there an ideal time to publish an article where you can take advantage of the most readers?

Question asked by Pollyannalana, sparked my curiosity.  Is there a perfect time to publish a hub so that your hub appears as fresh content to as many readers as possible?  Obviously, you can publish at anytime but is there a perfect time?

I think it is just of an advertising thing. If you post a well written article and don't know how to get traffic to it or where to get the traffic from then I don't think it makes much of a difference. However if you post an article that looks like it could have been written by a two year old and know where and how to get the traffic to it then that article can be very popular and even go viral on the web. So I don't think any specific time is of an importance.

I think that everyone's reading habits are different.  You could try to post at 3-6 pm EST when most people get home from work and Europe is still awake, Asia might be waking up.  I know that is when twitter and facebook like to have issues due to overloads.  But, there is also a lot of competition at that time.  I personally probably read more at night because there isn't much going on.  My Hubpages feed is dead so if something pops up it stays on there for a while.

I'm new to this, but logic would dictate that you need to target your intended audience as skilfully as possible, which means you'd want to end up at the top of the "new" list right at the time when the most of your potential visitors are hitting the site.

In addition, I'd keep in mind the fact that each broad group of topics will definitely have it's own sphere of surfers. For example, if you are publishing a video game hub, you'd want to target high-schoolers and young adults, so you'd publish around 4-5 pm when they get home from school and then maybe around 8-9 when most young adults that play get home from their part-time jobs. For child care advice, you're targeting moms mostly, so you would probably hit early or late morning, or whenever moms surf the net most. Market research would be crucial here, obviously.

So it depends on the topic, but that is because it depends on your target audience. Know your audience and you'll know your path to popularity.

Makes sense about publishing after people get home from work/school, but your hubs will stay, so I would just publish when works best for you. It would be nice if there was a scheduler on the hubs like WordPress offers. Then, we could write ahead and set to publish when we wanted.

I don't know for sure, Dave, but I have noticed that if I publish on the weekend, I get less traffic, at least at first. If I publish midweek, I get more readers initially. Are more hubbers writing than reading on weekends? Just a thought.

Hi. I have noticed that during the holidays, my holiday foods and tips are read more often than my other Hubs.  Maybe you could do something like that where you target people during certain times of the year like holidays or seasons.

Yes, a very interesting question!  I just attended a blogging lecture and was told that advertising rates are higher on weekdays vs. weekends due to heavier traffic.  So, it sounds like more traffic during the week, and posting on a Monday morning would be good for Hub Pages as well.  But there are many variables, including the timezone issue.  I read more Hubs during the week in the morning and evening.

For a short term viewing boost. I would go for posting in the week, at about noon till 2pm Eastern Time,  that will give you viewers in Europe getting home in the evening, Eastern US lunchtime surfers and Pacific Breakfast or just logging on surfers. So you have a maximum possible viewers online.

Bear in mind though that if everyone posts at this time you would have a lot of competition.

Another technique is also to make comments at these times too. This brings your hub back to the HubPages main page.

The problem with trying to time postings is that you want to reduce the competitions viewswhile increasing you own chances of being viewed. Posting at times when most people post means the HubPages main page will update too rapidly and you don't get time on the top of the page, which presumably is what you are looking for.

The best thing is to write evergreen content for a good portion of your hubs and so people can find them useful for a long time.

Just like print publishing, timing is key. Journalists always look for upcoming anniversaries, events, holidays and the like so they can publish stories which are relevant. If you want your hubs to get read then try to associate with or incorporate upcoming events or issues.

Search engines are obviously a powerful way of gaining traffic, and tools like Google Insights can help you to identify rising search terms. http://www.google.com/insights/search/

When you compare search terms over time you can begin to predict search behaviour on certain topics, like Christmas, FIFA World Cup, Eurovision or Thanksgiving, for example. Of course you can't always write about these national or global events in your hubs, but if you can incorporate the search terms you can benefit from that search traffic.
