How can you make a custom pet memorial or gravestone?
The one's I've seen are just not exactly what I want or they are extremely expensive and heavy and I would have to have them shipped. What are some ideas for making a durable, nice memorial that can be outdoors and stand up to the weather?- Longhunterposted 12 years ago
0First, I'm sorry you lost a pet. That's never an easy thing to endure.
As for the memorial, maybe a wooden cross or hand-painted plaque. Just make sure to use pressure treated wood and nails or screws that won't rust. Then use exterior paint.

They carve whatever you want into the stone which would be very difficult for us to do at home. The free shipping is very helpful because the stones are heavy. I think it cost us about $70.00.
It is heartbreaking to lose a pet - so sorry.Take a rock and cut into it. You can do it by yourself if you want. Just get the right tools. I've done it for my old pet cat, Crispin. Or make a plaster one with those shiny stones that people walk on in gardens.

My idea for this is to use plaster. I actually found for $10.00 at Walmart, in the craft section, a kit to mold plaster. This is directed for children and the shapes were hearts. It was easy to mix and pour into the mold. It had a nice design on one side that I let the kids paint when it was dry, but on the other side I smoothed the surface and put my kids hand in it to make a print.
We gave these to grandma for her garden though she mounted them in her living room.

You can probably find plaster/mixes at craft stores and make your mold. This would be inexpensive and you can carve and customize it.I have used a flat rock or paving stone and then set a garden statue that resembles the pet or represents the pet on the stone. For example, my little old Cocker Spaniel who loved children (my godson in particular) has an inexpensive statue of a little boy in a red wagon with a Cocker Spaniel. My old grouchy cat has a grouchy looking cat-like griffon!
You can get these types of statues from home garden centers, big department stores like WalMart, shops like Dollar Tree and Dollar General, or from mail order companies. They look nice in the yard and help remind me of my lost pets.When I lost my Cocker kid, Jake, a friend gave me a brick with his name on it. It's sealed so the name won't fade off. It's very attractive, has a couple of little dog paws painted on it for decoration. One thing that's nice (although I didn't go that route) is the brick can be set at ground level so if the grave is flat one can mow over it with no problem. So sorry about the loss of your dear friend.
