As far as I am aware the content on HubPages must be unique, not to be found elsewhere on the net.

Therefore my understanding is that after you write a hub and publish the same article on another website (including article directories) HubPages would take your hub down.

Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

I meant do people submit the link to hubs in article directories, twitter, stumbleupon, or things like
that?  I know we are not suppose to submit the article itself because hub content needs to be unique.

Article directories are sites where you can post and article or a link to an article that is on another site. There is usually no limit as to how many articles you can submit. With links however most directories have limits which can be per day, per week, per month and so on.
HubPages's articles must be original so they cannot be published on any other site including directories, but links can. Think of a directory like a place where you can post a link that will drive traffic to your hubs and depending on the rank of these directories this can prove to be beneficial. Word of caution; posting too many links can make Google look at you as a spammer, albeit probably temporarily.
Some of the best directories are according to rank with 1 being the best:
    1.   knol.google.com (why I am not surprised by this one?)
    2.   ehow
    3.   squidoo
    4.   HubPages (yes...that's us)
    5.   ezinearticles
    6.   examiner
    7.   technorati
    8.   articlebase
    9.   seekinalpha
    10. buzzle

There are many more , but these are the top 10. Keep in mind that most of these do not allow links only although articles with some links are mostly welcome.
    list can be found here:http://www.vretoolbar.com/articles/directories.php

You shouldn't submit your Hubs content directly to an article directory as your Hub must remain unique.

An article directory is just that, its a directory full of articles. Because of this they will not allow you to just post a link to your Hub, they prefer having the content on their own website.
What you may be able to do is write an article that is similar or compliments your Hub and contains a couple of backlinks, and submit this to an article directory.
