Where can one find free legally downloadable music of any genre?

I have heard that there are sites with non-mainstream music and others like old blues, folk which are not protected and can be legally downloaded free.

be very careful. i used to look for the same thing, and went through a few sites, but they are all trouble. recently i bought MP3 Rocket, i get tv and music and games and the ability to file share. i thought because i bought the program, then whatever i uploaded was ok...until i was contacted by my internet provider saying i was in danger of a law suit for illegally uplaoding copy writ materials. i assured them i had no intentions of doing that and promptly deleted all the files i had uploaded. now i just use it for the music stations and ocassionally tv or games. i find it is much better simply to find the songs i want from places like amazon where i can buy and upload singles or whole albums. i DO feel better knowing i am doing nothing illegal and the artists are getting paid for their talent.

One of the best free sites is Noisetrade.com. With Noisetrade the artists directly make there music available for free downloads. If you like what you hear you have the option of leaving a tip.

Bandcamp.com isn't exactly a free site because the artists names the price, but some artists do make free downloads available. Others make the download available for name your price, is could include free. Both Bandcamp and Noisetrade allows you to stream entire albums and song for free which is an added bonus.

Another good site is Daytrotter, but it is no longer free (even though streaming is free). But it only costs two dollars a month and you get unlimited downloads. Basically the artists record sessions for Daytrotter and these sessions are available for download. This includes many of the better known indie artists such as Bon Iver, Wilco, Iron & Wine, The Civil Wars, Moby, etc...

One other free resource I have used from time to time is the free music archive (http://freemusicarchive.org/). All of the songs are made available through a creative common license, through different curators.

    I recently found this site..."Jamendo"

    http://www.jamendo.com/en/

This is a site where bands post their own songs and users can listen to them using the player provided by the site or download them for free. There are a wide variety of genres/styles. The site is located in Europe so many of these bands don't perform in English, but despite that you're bound to find something interesting.
