Is America being crushed under the weight of Government-mandated entitlement programs?
Well, LLM, that depends on what one considers an entitlement program? What programs specifically?
America has half the population paying NO INCOME TAX. In fact, a large portion of these actually get money back they didn't pay into the system. It's called earned income credit. I know several people who get from $3000-5000 back and they didn't even pay a dime into the system. On top of that, the government pays billions to programs that give away money to all sorts of unnecessary programs. Add that to all the entitlements. Yep the TAXPAYERS are being crushed. The others are doing just fine taking a free ride on the backs of the oppressed, but the liberals (esp. the White House) would have you believe it is the taxpayers who are getting the better deal.
As this in politics and social issues - North American Politics and Social Issues. To which country in North America are you referring, Canada, Mexico, one of the indepedant off shore islands, or the USA?
@Credence 2 - I am referring to programs that lend themselves to generations of single families that receive government money for doing nothing.
Government mandated entitlement programs is a burden. Government programs in some instances require actions by states but do not provide the funding to pay for them. I do agree some mandated programs do make sense and in some respects states have some responsibility but in general principle if government levies a requirement they should provide the funding to pay for them.
Mandated requirements also involve the many regulations and rules put in place by government departments and agencies. These need to be streamlined to be more efficient. They should keep the regulations which fall in line with their responsibilities as identified in the Constitution. If they are not in agreement with the Constitution, they should be eliminated.
The simple answer to your question is look at the escalating national debt.

Do Americans have a sense of entitlement? With welfare, unemployment, new public healthcare and other social programs being provided by the government, are Americans feeling a sense of entitlement? Do some Americans feel that they are owed something just for being born here?
