Why would anyone pour sugar onto spaghetti?
I know two people who do this and even they can't explain why. It's not bad enough that white pasta will act like sugar in their systems very quickly, they pour the white stuff onto their pasta & red sauce too.
Is the sauce spicy hot? Spicy is sometimes balanced with sweetness. Tart is also balanced by sweetness. Fruit works just as well as sugar. It is just harder to spread over spaghetti.
I don't but sometimes, when I'm cooking and the sauce is too tart, I add a little sprinkling of sugar just to balance the taste but never a lot. I agree that the starch in the pasta has enough sugar already.
The people I know that do this don't even taste the pasta or sauce prior to dumping white sugar (yes, I watch as they pour about 1/4 - 1/2 cup) on their food whether they go out to eat or are at home. The sauce is just a regular red sauce or marinara and it's never spicy as these sugar lovers hate spicy foods. I can't figure it out, it seems to be habit, not balancing anything out because they don't even taste the food before pouring sugar on.
Some people like sweet tomato sauce. Lots of recipes for red sauce call for a little sugar, it's not unheard of.
However, 1/4 - 1/2 cup is pretty excessive. They must have had some weird upbringing where they never ate unsweetened food and now they can't eat normal food without a ton of sugar. I know someone who always dumps a ton of salt on his food because he always ate that way growing up.
Some people like a sweet taste in their pasta. Their mother's probably did that. I personally think that ruins it.
I even know some people who put brown sugar in chili. I think it is disgusting but there is a whole bunch of people who love Cincinnatti style chili.
