How does our sense of taste evolve as we get older?
Changes as to what we prefer or prefer not to eat?
As a RN I learned that as we age we desire more sweet foods because we can taste them better. Hope this helps!
I know many things can effect our sense of taste, whether it is caused by cancer treatments, zinc deficiency, certain drugs, smoking, and so on. As for our sense of taste evolving as we get older, I don't see much of a correlation.
Of course, taste and smell along with your other senses will slowly decline with really old age.
Anyway, to be more germane, I just read on a .gov website: "The number of taste buds decreases beginning at about age 40 to 50 in women and at 50 to 60 in men. Each remaining taste bud also begins to atrophy (lose mass). The sensitivity to the four taste sensations does not seem to decrease until after age 60, if at all. If taste sensation is lost, usually salty and sweet tastes are lost first, with bitter and sour tastes lasting slightly longer."
I think it gets more sophisticated. My curiosity about food allows me to try things now that I never would have considered when I was younger. There's only 2 things that I will not eat: liver and a certain chop suey that my mom used to make!
I can't bring myself to eat chitterlings!
For example, I used to like chicken soup and hate tomato soup, but now it's the other way around. And l like certain vegetables that my parents don't and refuse to have in the house.
