   I bought my iPad online because it was out of stock at the time I wanted one.  The only way I could find one was to shop online.

   This is actually a good question, as it makes me think of all the crap I have bought online...
   In all seriousness, I suppose it was when I bought a Power Tower, which is a form of exercise equipment that cost nearly 300 dollars.  Other than that, most of the items I buy online is under 200 dollars.

   Product wise the most expensive item i bought online was a camera lens for my SLR. $1500+
   
   Vacation or travel wise its easy to spend a few $k online.
   
   I trade stocks mutual funds online as well so that is a whole other order of magnitude.
   
   In any case, research what you are purchasing first, buy it from respected vendors with secure websites. Make sure your passwords are confidential, complex and frequently changed.

   The most expensive item that I have ever bought online was a horse trailer about 5 years ago. I bought it from a private seller on E-bay and it cost me over £1000.00
   It was in fabulous condition and was worth a lot more that I paid for it. I kept it for a year and when I went to sell it on, I actually got £1150.00 for it, so I made a small profit.

   The most expensive thing I have ever bought online is a desktop computer for $1500 from DELL. I was able to build my own computer and add all the things I wanted or needed.
