Seen Time Magazine’s new cover on extended breastfeeding and the attachment parenting movement?
Did you think the cover’s bold photo & title “Mom Enough” was intentionally worded to create a heated debate between moms who choose to attach. parent & those who do not. Think they will succeed?
I saw the cover. Although I see nothing wrong with nursing your child for an extended period I think it would be better for mothers of children as old as the one in the picture to express their milk and let them drink it out of a cup. I wonder how this boy is going to feel when he and his friends see the cover when they are teenagers.
I found the photo interesting. First, did they pick the tallest 3yr old toddler could find? Did they really need to put him on a stool to make him look taller? If you saw a yr old w/a bottle would you feel the same? Time wanted to pit moms vs moms!
Well, it is definitely meant to draw attention. Especially considering breastfeeding is only one component of the idea of attachment parenting, which goes well beyond just breastfeeding for a prolonged time. It is especially interesting because the photo doesn't look intimate. It looks derived and mechanical, which isn't what the movement is supposedly about.
We live in a tabloid world though, so magazines do what sells. I don't see it making much of a difference. Prudishness is so ingrained in some people that it is essentially a neurosis and they will predictably go spastic at the photo and start proselytizing about the end of the world. That reaction can't lead to any useful debate.
Your comment made me laugh, I tend to agree! I suspect Time will get more than they bargained for though with both sides of the coin yelling at them!
I'm all for breast feeding and all that. I don't think you should be publishing pictures of it because it shows an absolute lack of give-a-dang about how that child is going to feel about that picture later in his life.
I disagree in general w/ regards to photos of nursing children. But a national photo of this nature, I suppose it is possible. But, it is also possible he'll grow up in a house learning to stand up for your beliefs & be more proud than embarassed
Of course it was intentionally worded to spark debate. In the world of journalism, hot topics, friction and emotions sell. They want to catch your attention and keep it. The cover will do that. Then they pack an emotional punch with the question "Are you Mom Enough?" The goal is to get you thinking, talking...and garner more readers by creating a story (and cover) that gets people talking.
I want to point out that extended nursing isn't just about the milk. A better term would be extended weaning, I think. Parents just drop a few sessions at a time, and begin limiting nursing sessions. The process taking many months instead of a few weeks. Each parent needs to do what's best for their child and their family. Sometimes that's extended nursing, sometimes it isn't. Neither choice should be up for critique.
Attach Parent is def more than the cover. The defiant stance of the mom is ridiculous! They certainly got attention but I think both people who attach parent & those who don't are rather upset at the portrayal. Thanks for your insightful comments
My concern for the boy. What his friends thinks about him? Does the mother think about future implications for the boy?
She is extended nursing, she cares for him & his future a great deal. BFing has shown to make kids more independent. Hopefully, she'll teach him to be a leader not a follower. I do see your point w/ all the national attention. It was a poor photo

We have all heard of attachment parenting and co-sleeping etc. But is it too much to be breast feeding your almost 4 year old son??? In my former profession as an RECE I have met many women who have done this and I have seen the results of this process, not always so positive especially in later...

My family seems to have a problem with the fact that I still breastfeed my son. He has his own milk and juice but at night I like to give some extra nutrients. He is walking and starting to talk with a mouth full of teeth. Should I stop breastfeeding him?

This is one of those stories that seem to have legs and one that we are going to hear more about. It is one of the few forum topics where I have not expressed an opinion either way. I am hoping that the hub pages community will weigh in, share thoughts and allow me to evaluate each side, if...

Breast feeding in public bans? What do you think about breast feeding bans? I think mothers should cover themselves, but not be banned or forced to go to restrooms (gross-would you want to eat sitting on a public toilet?)
